The Romance of Tea

Long associated with increased enjoyment of life, the origins of tea as a highly sought after beverage go back almost 5,000 years!  In China and the Orient , tea has been known since 2700BC.

Introduced to the Western World in the mid-1600's, tea was an expensive luxury, in high demand by the European nobility.  It was only after tea plantations were developed by the Dutch and the British in the Far East, that tea became readily available.

Tea is more than simply a drink.  It has been the object of veneration and ceremony over centuries, in every corner of the world - symbolising good taste, friendship and a calming healthy experience.  But remember - only quality tea is good enough!

The Growing of Fine Tea

Tea is harvested from a plant which belongs to the camellia family (Camellia Sinensis).  Black (fermented), green (unfermented) and oolong (semi-fermented) teas are all produced from the same species of plant.  The best teas come from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), India, China and Taiwan.

Like fine wine, the quality of tea depends on climatic conditions, regional characteristics, the expertise of the plantation manager and the tea blender.  But, also like good wine there is only a limited quantity of premium tea available, which is why many of the cheap supermarket teas lack quality.

"If you are cold, tea will warm you -
If you are heated, it will cool you -
If you are depressed, it will cheer you -
If you are excited, it will calm you."
(William E Gladstone)

Tea - Healthy and Pleasurable

Long regarded in the Orient as a health beverage, tea is now medically accepted as having natural properties (polyphenols which process antioxidants) beneficial to health.  A cup of tea generally has only one-third the caffeine content of a typical cup of coffee.
