JUDGING RULES
1. Any plant with damaged or deformed flowers on the raceme being
judged will be excluded from the competition.
2. Any plant entered in the wrong section will be disqualified.
3. With the respect to seedlings any hybrid or sibling species crossing
or selfing of a species flowering for the first time and being a complete
plant, will be entered in its appropriate class. (Progressive and sequential
flowering genera seedlings may loose the first two flowers and still be
considered a seedling)
4. The 66% Rule applies to all genera.
5. A.O.C. Rules will apply except where a local rule is in force.
6. As from January 2002 plants with ties, hooks or supports of any kind
around the ovary, or any part of the flowers attachment to the raceme,
will be disqualified.
LAELIINAE
Refer to "A.O.C. Guidelines for judging handbook" for definition
of standard, non-standard: not meeting the criteria
Largest Flower determines size
The 50% Rule applies to plants with 2 flowers.
The 66% Rule applies to all others
CYMBIDIUM
All Cymbidiums must have 7 or more flowers open
The 66% Rule applies to all classes
Majority of flowers determine size
PAPHIOPEDILUM
Species = including selfing, sibling crosses and crosses of two different
clones of the same species.
Primary Hybrid = Two different species crossed (see Multifloral &
Maudiae rules)
Maudiae Type = Will be judged by their resemblance to Maudiae and not
breeding.
Non Standard = Essentially a plant which does not meet the criteria for
any other class in its particular section.
Multifloral = 3 or more flowers opened or 66% whichever is the greater.
Multiflorals not meeting this criteria may be entered in Primary Hybrid
or Non Standard Hybrid.
Predominately Spotted = Spots must be the predominant feature of the flower
NOTE = 66% Rule applies.
DENDROBIUM
Phalaenanthe = Minimum of 7 flowers open or 66% which ever is the greater
per raceme.
Ceratobium or Intermediate = 66% of flowers must be open.
Nobile Type Minimum of 12 flowers open on at least one cane.
Pansy Type Dendrobiums must be entered in ANY OTHER CLASS
PHALAENOPSIS (INCLUDES DORITAENOPSIS)
Standard = Minimum of 7 flowers or 66% whichever is the greater per raceme.
Non Standard = No flower count applies (generally applies to small flowers
or unusual colours depending on parentage)
Standard Shape = as described in the A.O.C. judging handbook majority
of flowers determines size.
ONCIDIINAE ALLIANCE HYBRIDS
Odontoglossum & Odontioda = Minimum 7 flowers desirable.
Varicosum Type = Must resemble the species Onc. Varicosum with large yellow
skirt.
Miltoniopsis = minimum 3 flowers open.
66% rule applies to all entries.
VANDEAE
Vanda/Ascocentrum hybrids must not contain any other genera in their breeding.
(Minimum of 6 flowers applies to this group only)
Mixed hybrids of Vanda, Ascocentrum, Rhyncostylis, Aerides, Arachnis,
Renanthera, Neofinetia, Vandopsis, Gastrochilus, Trichoglottis and similar
lesser-known species. Must be entered in any other Vandaceous hybrid section.
If you have any doubt ask your registrar.
AUST. NATIVE SPECIES. (Epiphytic & Terrestrial)
Includes all known species and sibling crossings (i.e.) A selfing of an
individual clone of a species or a cross using 2 individual clones of
a specific species.
Phalaenopsis amabilis WILL NOT be classed as an Australian Native
and must be entered as a Phalaenopsis species.
Phalaenopsis rosenstromii and Dendrobium phalaenopsis WILL BE classed
as Australian Native and must be entered as Australian Natives.
Cym. canaliculatum, madidum & sauve and any hybrid containing
these species must be entered as Australian Natives.
AUST. NATIVE HYBRIDS
As the name implies all parents must be Australian Natives
ANY OTHER SPECIES
Is for all species, which do not have a specific section within the listed
classes.
ANY OTHER HYBRID
Is for all hybrids, which do not have a specific section within the listed
classes.
SPECIMENS ALL GENERA
Generally speaking this means that all plants will have a minimum of 3
spikes, however the exceptions are listed below.
Intermediate Cymbidium = 5 Spikes
Miniature Cymbidium = 7 spikes
Lycaste = Minimum of 3 individual flower stems
Dendrobium Hardcanes = 3 racemes may be on 1 or more canes.
Dendrobiums Softcanes = Minimum of 3 canes with a min of 12 flowers per
cane
Remember flower counts and percentages apply to all specimens as listed
for the individual classes and deformed flowers on any raceme being judged
will be disqualified
SEEDLINGS
See rules of competition clause 3
No flower count applies
ALL PLANTS ENTERED IN CLASSES MUST NOT HAVE ANY FLOWERS MISSING. THE
ONLY EXCEPTIONS BEING WHERE IT IS THE NATURE OF THE PLANT TO HAVE PROGRESSIVE
FLOWERING, OR WHERE A FLOWER HAS BEEN KNOCKED OFF DURING TRANSPORT, IN
WHICH CASE THE OFFENDING FLOWER WILL BE PRESENTED ALONG WITH THE PLANT
FOR THE JUDGES ASSESSMENT.
This schedule and rules of competition have been prepared in an attempt
to assist all societies and their members in understanding the Rules of
Judging.
