General Notes: Was a naturalist and collector all his life; collected coins and stamps. In later life he collected a considerable amount of information about his family and even made contact with the College of Arms.

After Ada died in 1935, Mabel Frost, who had been housekeeper at the Rectory at Trottiscliffe, stayed on as housekeeper when he retired to Broom Downs, Wateringbury in 1948.
He died in 1957 aged 90.

Bagshaw's Directory of Kent 1847 (vol 1) SoG Sept 1996 lists him as a Corn Miller.
In 1851 he was a Miller and Farmer of 170 acres of Walden Place, Wateringbury, Kent. He was then 48 and from Ryarsh. Ann, his wife was 40 and from Wateringbury.
The children were as follows:- Catherine 11 Wateringbury, Ann 9, Walter 7 Wateringbury, Elizabeth 6, James 4, Frank 2, and Apprentice Miller, Charles Fremlin 19 Wrotham.
This Charles would be James' nephew, son of Jesse, born 1832, so 19 at the time of this census.
The 1841 census has the family at Warden Place with James (a miller) age 35, Ann was 30, Ralph 7, Richard 5, Arthur 3. and Catherine 1. They had one male and one female servant. The address in 1871 is Wardens House and Mill, he was a Miller, Farmer and Brickmaker employing 43 men and 8 boys. He was farming 350 acres. Ann was 60 and a farmers wife.
The other family members were Richard 38, Miller and farmers assistant, Walter T, 26 Brewer, Frances 19?, Helen 17, and Grandson, Frederick Key age 3 from New Cross, Kent.
The "Returns of owners of land" 1873 has him owning 17 acres at Wateringbury with an estimated income per annum of £316/6/0. He must have rented the rest of the land he worked.
It is interesting to note that all his children were baptised by the Rev Robert Earle who was vicar of the parish up to about 1840, when Henry Stevens took over. He was still the incumbent in 1851 when the four children born in the 1840s were baptised, but the signature in the book for those too is Robert Earle, and the date January 22nd was a Wednesday .
