LOCATION
Found at 800-1700 m in soil overlying granite outcrops in Papua New Guinea.

PLANT DESCRIPTION
Tessellated leaves are up to 25cm in length 2-4.2 cm in wide. No pigmentation underneath.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION
INFLORESCENCE
Solitary flower at a height up to 30 cm.
DORSAL SEPAL
The ovate, acute dorsal is yellow or yellow-green marked with purple veins and bears a white, ciliate margin.
VENTRAL SEPAL
Yellowish green, elliptic to lanceolate and quite small.
PETALS
Spatulate petals are held nearly horizontal. Petals are maroon with the exception of the proximal area located below the mid-vein, which is yellow-green and marked with narrow brown stripes and verrucae. The ciliate margins exhibit some undulation.
LABELLUM
Dark, reddish brown colour with greenish yellow lobes.

FLOWERING SEASON
Winter and early Spring.

LOCATION
Grows as an epiphyte or a lithophyte at elevations of 1250-2200 m extending from Eastern Burma to Thailand and southern China. Var dianthum is found as lithophyte on limestone outcrops, occassionally epiphytic.

PLANT DESCRIPTION
5-8 large deep green leaves up to 45 cm in length and 4-7.5 cm in width.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION
INFLORESCENCE
3-7 flowers on a peduncle of 30-50 cm.
DORSAL SEPAL
Elliptic. Colour is pale to medium green with darker veins. Reflexing of the basal margins occur to some degree. The apex curves forward over the pouch.
VENTRAL SEPAL
The bicarinate synsepalum is ovate and held back at an angle from the undersurface of the pouch. Apple green in colour.
PETALS
The ribbon like petals are pendulous, tapered and twisted. The apices bear velvety tufts of pubescence and are cupped or ladle shaped. Petal colour is green proximally with pubescent maroon warts, the distal half is uniformly dark maroon.
LABELLUM
Tapers to a narrow apex. Yellow-green to a deeper green, flushed with brownish purple.

FLOWERING SEASON
Late Spring and Summer.

Flowers of var dianthum are somewhat larger but are borne on  a shorter flower scape. Peduncle is pappillose instead of pubescent. It also has less spotting on the petals and a larger lip.

LOCATION
Found on limestone outcrops at elevations of 0-500m in the Philippines and on islands near Borneo. Var roebelenii is only found on Luzon Island in the Philippines.

PLANT DESCRIPTION
7-9 green leaves which achieve lengths of 15 to 50 cm in length and 5-6 cm in width.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION
INFLORESCENCE
2-5 flowers to a height of 50cm.
DORSAL SEPAL
White, striped with maroon. Ovate and acute.
VENTRAL SEPAL
Similar in all respects.
PETALS
Elongated and pendulous. Adorned with maroon warts along the margins proximally. Petal margins are also ciliate and the cilia are arranged in tufts growing out of the warts.Yellow basally, gradually darkening to maroon, fading to pale green at the apices. Petals go through one complete spiral from base to apex.
LABELLUM
Helmet shaped. Yellow to tawny buff in colour and veined with green.

FLOWERING SEASON
Late Winter or Spring.

Var roebelenii has a more verrucose staminode and the petals are longer and more pendulous and twisted.

LOCATION
Found in humus at an elevation of 400-500 m in Sumatra.

PLANT DESCRIPTION
4-7 narrow green leaves 15-17 cm long and 2.5 to 3.8 cm wide . No purple pigmentation.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION
INFLORESCENCE
Many flowers open sequentially on a peduncle 20-35 cm long.
DORSAL SEPAL
The ovate dorsal is green with pubescence on its outer surface and cilia upon its margins.
VENTRAL SEPAL
Similar colour but narrow and shorter.
PETALS
Yellow petals are twisted and ciliate. They may be horizontal to slightly drooping.
LABELLUM
Yellow pouch is elongate and inflated at the tip.

FLOWERING SEASON
Starts in Spring and Summer and continuing for up to a year.

Var purpurascens is similar in size but is faintly flushed with purple on the labellum and bears some purple spotting on the petals. Slight purple mottling occurs on the undersides of the leaves.

LOCATION
Grows in moss and detritus on steep rocky hillsides and river gorges in Hong Kong and China.

PLANT DESCRIPTION
Leaf colour is variable from yellow-green to bluish green with varying degrees of tessellation. No purple pigmentation underneath. Leaf length of 7.5 - 17.5 cm and 2.5 - 4 cm width.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION
INFLORESCENCE
Solitary flower at a height of up to 20cm.
DORSAL SEPAL
THE ACUTE DORSAL SEPAL IS BROADLY OVATE WITH REFLEXED LATERAL MARGINS. THE GROUND  COLOUR IS WHITE. UNEQUAL VEINS OF PURPLE STRIPE THE DORSAL TO WITHIN 1MM OF THE MARGIN.
VENTRAL SEPAL
Lanceolate and is green with dark green venation.
PETALS
The glossy, elliptic petals are dark maroon with the exception of a small proximal region of attachment which is greenish white. Blackish maroon spots are liberally dispersed over the proximal third of the petals.The margins are ciliate. Petals held more or less horizontal with a tendency to recurve apically.
LABELLUM
Maroon to mahogany.

FLOWERING SEASON
Late Autumn to early Winter.
