If you've never flown a rocket before and don't own one yet - this page
is for you. The best way to get into the exciting hobby of model rocketry
is easy - just follow these simple steps:
- Plan to go to a hobby store with the intent to buy a starter kit,
with the understanding that you DO NOT launch these things inside
your house!!! They travel at +300km/h and will go right through
your roof (or body parts) if you are not careful. I make this point
first because some people who are new to the hobby do actually launch
their first rocket in the living room, having no idea what to expect
because they didn't do any homework, or reading (and obeying) the model
rocket safety code. (This happened in Perth some time in 2001/2002).
- Go to your local hobby store and buy a rocket starter kit. They cost
around $65 and usually include a pre built rocket, a launch pad, a launch
control and some recovery wadding.
- You will also need to buy batteries to suit your launch control plus
a packet of motors to suit your rocket. This information will be listed
on the rocket starter pack. The total initial cost will be close to
$100 - after that you will only need to buy motors (average of $17 for
3 motors) and once in a while more recovery wadding ($10 a pack).
- Download and read the model rocket safety code (see downloads page).
This is important! Rockets can be dangerous, so take five minutes to
read this short document.
- Attend a complementary Perth Advanced Rocket Club rocket launch (see
the flight calendar for details). If you live in
Perth, phone Phil on the Rocketry Hotline on 0418 917 410 to confirm
your attendance. If you live in Albany or surrounding areas, phone Paul
on: 9845-2354.
- Someone will walk you through the preparation and launching of your
rocket.
- If you enjoy the hobby (we guarantee you will!) and you want to fly
the higher power rockets that you will see at your complementary launch
or if you want to be able to fly (legally) over 122m (400ft), then download
the Perth Advanced Rocket Club membership form and send it off along
with a cheque or money order for $45 for Children 17 and under, $85
for Adults 18+ or $120 for A family of 2 Adults and 2 Children.
It's that easy!
