FIASCO

Why Fiasco?
Originally taken from the book "Money" by Martin Amis where the main character called his car fiasco. I owned a couple of FIATs- my little (much abused) X1/9 was heavily modified and completely worn out by the time it was undeservedly stopped and deservedly stickered. The nice uniformed man said it was okay, because I had two weeks to get it fixed up. TWO WEEKS?? A year maybe?

I next bought a basket case of an old 124 coupe on a dark and rainy night. On Jane's suggestion, I lashed out on personalised plates. FIASCO, white on blue to match the company logo. I got away with driving this one for a year before losing it to a big roadblock-type police event. The plates went into storage until the day that thry started importng the new FIAT Punto. I signed up for a new 1.9 turbodiesel sport. The plates came out of storage again. The guy at the dealership was impressed I already had plates before buying the car but asked quizzically, "why fiasco?". I rolled my eyes, realising that he just hadn't been selling Italian cars for long enough.

In the mean time, the FIASCO name was used for the family email address and other things along the way. And you know, hardly a day goes by when you don't read about some sort of fiasco in the papers.

This page is a link to some stuff of mine.

Some interesting paddling videos on youtube. Headcam stuff, Avon valley & more. Easiest to simply search for the username bastardfiasco (I couldn't get any username that began with fiasco) or avon descent or something.

My little paddling diaries in this page.

Maybe try some GPS tracks. I have hundreds. These should open in GoogleEarth, if you have it installed (and the Moore track can also link onwards to data at MotionBased)
Moore River 2007
Drain Race 2008

I have also sent off a series of placemarks for Avon Valley rapids to GoogleEarth and await their approval for publishing. The first ones I did early in the year are there now (Bells, Moondyne, Waly chute, Syds, Emu, Waly lookout). In GoogleEarth, turn on "Google Earth Community". Tick the box, under Gallery>Google Earth Community.

Why not print a list of Avon river rapids? Laminate it, tape it to your deck and you will know where you are

Analysis of Avon River water levels and rainfall data and a short discussion about the first weekend in August

Read about the convict fence, Canning River near Shelley. There is a nice little book, "Messing About In Ernest" in bookshops around Fremantle, written by a guy who built a small rowing boat and rowed and sailed it up and down the length of the Swan and Canning Rivers.

Tasmania. Whitewater Nationals.
Internet and enthusiasm permitting, I hope to post some stories &/or video.
