Vamoose Takes 2001 State Championships
Mark Fitzhardinge with Chris Chapple, David Larmour and John Morgan took out the 2001 State Championships held over the 3-5 March weekend.  Vamoose nearly made a clean sweep on the event faltering in two races with a second and third placing.

Eight Thunderbirds competed in the event, which was sailed over a series of seven races on the Swan River.  Principal Race Officer Ken Brooke did very well to get the seven races in with the light and variable breezes.

Condor remained a consistent threat to the event lead and sailed well to not only take second place overall in the Championship but also take out first place in the handicap.

All other boats in the fleet were at one time or another in or very close to the lead.  This is a real indication that the fleet is on fine shape.   Results      Race by Race notes

Killara Takes Shape
Andrew Hebb and Jane have stopped pulling Killara apart and are now on the journey to getting her back to sailing mode.  They have done a lot of work replacing any dodgy bits of ply and timber and bringing her back to her glory.  Work commitments have slowed the process, but she is beginning to look the goods. New Owner Joins the Fleet
Great news for Thunderbirders!  Bruce Spencer joined the Fleet today when he took over Metala.  Bruce, a member of RPYC and former Skate skipper of note, has not sailed for nearly 10 years and is looking forward to joining us very soon - the boat needs a short while on the hard for new anti-fouliong.  Welcome.

Killara Takes to the Road
Wondering where that light blue boat has gone - Andrew has taken it home.  Killara (the former Lyelta) is now snug in a shed at the back of Jane and Andrew's home ready for a major rejuvenation.

Both Jane and Andrew are looking forward to the task - now much simplified by having the boat out of the weather and "just out the back door".

The transition from pen to shed was fairly painless.  The keel was dropped off without any trouble - simply undo the bolts, punch them through and lift the boat.  The hull was lowered onto a custom frame complete with wheels and the whole lot placed on the back of truck with the club's Tammy Lift.  A crane at home finished the job and the boat was simply wheeled into the shed.    Some pictures:

Thunderbirds Thunder-sing!
Another off season engagement that was "not to be missed".  A musical evening - "Chicken Man play Gershwin".

22 members of the Fleet descended on Chris and Marg's house for not just a night of musical merriment but also a feast from the webbers - beef and fish cooked superbly and accompanied by a huge selection of salads and other tasty dishes.  Needless to say, the night was well oiled with the odd bottle of wine and port - it's winter down here.

Once again Brian (aka Chicken Man) tinkled the ivories, ably supported by the Fleet's resident flautist Helen and Chris on guitar.  Vocal involvement was mandatory, though some of the younger members amongst the group may have had to refer to the words for some of the older (more classic) numbers.

Fleet 27  - Annual Report to ITCA – June 2000
The Fleet now has actively sailing in its events all the Thunderbirds that float.   Ten boats are now on the Fleet’s register and compete regularly on Saturday afternoon Fleet races out of Royal Perth Yacht Club on the Swan River.  A regular twilight cruise on Thursday evenings sees some of the fleet enjoying the pleasant weather of Perth.

State Championships were held during March 2000 with 9 boats competing.  Chris Chapple took out the series on a count back from Rob Wallace in Thunderation.  There were tight tussles throughout the very successful five race series.

The annual weekend cruise to Rottnest was well attended and again a highlight of the social calendar. Further social events, including mulled wine evenings in the cooler months, have further bonded the Fleet.  The newly appointed Social Secretary Colin Smith has coordinated these events.

Sadly, one of the Fleet’s fathers, Noel Sememns (Metala) passed away during the season.  His support of the Fleet for more than 30 years was immense and will be missed.

There is only one other Thunderbird in Western Australia and this is currently under a major refit.  It is anticipated that this boat will join the Fleet when complete in a year or two.  The Fleet is keen to increase its numbers and is looking to promote the import of boats from Australia’s eastern seaboard.

The Fleet is in excellent health with great competition, enjoyment and camaraderie.  The coming season looks to be an even better one.

Fleet 27 Enjoys a Great Day Out
With the 1999/2000 season squared away and winter fast approaching, the Fleet took advantage of a great autumn day ( one of Perth's best) to wander across the river to the South of Perth Yacht Club for lunch.  Four boats from the Fleet sailed from Royal Perth Yacht in absolute ideal conditions, a most pleasant sail.  Pausing on arrival for a group photo on the jetty heralded a wonderful meal overlooking the yacht clubs frostbite sailing interspersed with results of the soccer final relayed from the wardroom below.  A fantastic day.

Magic Joins the Fleet
Colin Smith has recently taken delivery of Magic, a fiberglass Thunderbird built by Bruce King in Geelong in the mid 80s.  She was fitted with a lightweight inboard diesel motor and  has been used for cruising in recent years.  Colin, not new comer to the Thunderbirds having crewed on Piranha and others in the early 80s, will be joining the Fleet on Saturdays to race. Sirocco Unveiled
Brian Conner's hard work in transforming Thor (previously Piranha) has paid off handsomely.  Not yet wet, the newly named Sirocco is a gleaming tribute to the hard work and many hours Brian and Matthew have put in over the last two months - rumor had it that they were there 'til well into the wee hours of the morning sandpaper in hand.  The finish on the hull is something to behold.  Photo

Vamoose Wins States in Tight Tussle
Mark Fitzhardinge and Chris Chapple, Vamoose, took out Fleet 27's 98/99 State Championships in a closely contended series in Perth.  The series went down to the last race with three boats in with a good chance.  The conditions were magnificent, though the first heat was hit with a major wind change.

The final points do not truly show the closeness of the racing throughout the Fleet.  A comment made by a skipper of another class (MB24s) which co-held their championships was " They may not have as big a fleet as us, but gee those Thunderbirds are competitive..."  I think this sums up the event - a shame we could not get the whole Fleet together, but a great series.    Results details   (Mark Fitzhardinge)

Magic Moves to Fremantle Sailing Club
Wondered where Magic has shifted to?  She's now down at Fremantle Sailing Club - Warren still has her for sail, so if you are after a great chance to get into a fiberglass T'bird contact me - Mark Fitzhardinge

Thor Hits the Water
There's a new looking T'bird in the Fleet.  Andrew Hebb has repainted the old white Piranha yet another colour - not the pink he threatened, but black.  She looks great and now in named Thor - after the god of thunder.  Both Jane and Andrew have put  a huge amount of work into Thor, not only on the outside, but the inside cabin and bilges - Jane still has white streaks in her hair.  Have a look at the finished product - Thor

Am I seeing Double?
The other day I went down for casual sail and it being a beautiful day was not surprised to see Thunderstruck out for a sail - what caused me to have a double look, was another Thunderstruck at the Fuel Jetty resplendent in her new green hull.
What's happened?
Ben Blake and Andrew Hebb have swapped hulls and rigs, but they have kept everything else including boat names - the old white Piranha is no more, she has now been repainted green by Andrew.  Ben will, presumably rename the old Thunderstruck Piranha.

RPYC Prize Night - 15 May
What a pleasant way to end the season - a large contingent of thunderbirders dining in style at the Royal Perth Yacht Club's annual prize night.  Jim Baker took of the Terry Hebb trophy for Consistency - what a great year for Blue Thunder and her crew.

Thunderbird's 50th Birthday - celebrating a little early!
What a boat - a design nearly 50 year's old and people still build them - not through nostalgia, but simply because they are a great sailing boat.
Fleet 4 in Victoria, British Columbia are, in July 1999, holding a Rendezvous for all past and present Thunderbird to celebrate the Thunderbirds in its first 50 years.  The get together will be held to coincide with the 1999 Thunderbird Internationals - also at Victoria, BC.
Further information should be available on a web site soon to be built - www.tbird4.org
