Birds
Australia Western Australia (Inc) Birds Australia WA is the only organised birding group in Western Australia. They organise monthly meetings (8pm on the 4th Monday at the WA Tennis Centre Burswood), frequent excursions and camp outs, displays, research projects (e.g. Birds on Farms; Hooded Plover Survey; WA National Parks Database; Metropolitan Bird Survey), the bird guide brochure series, members library, slide library, etc. They publish the excellent monthly Western Australian Bird Notes. Every birding visitor to WA should go to the office to obtain some of the bird guides and purchase a booklet on birding sites around Perth. |
Birds Australia Birds Australia is one of the two national birding groups. They are centred in Melbourne but they have regional groups around Australia. They publish the quarterly magazine Wingspan and the quarterly journal Emu. They organise many national research projects such as the Atlas of Australian Birds, Birds of Prey Watch, Nest Record Scheme, Threatened Bird Network, etc. They operate four bird observatories including the Broome Bird Observatory and the Eyre Bird Observatory in Western Australia which are both must see places to visit. Allan Burbidge has some information about the BBO and the EBO on his web pages. Birds Australia have purchased Gluepot Station in South Australia as a nature reserve. They also have special interest groups such as the Australasian Wader Study Group, Australasian Raptor Association, Australasian Seabird Group, Birds Australia Parrot Association. |
Bird Observers Club of Australia BOCA is the other national birding group. They are centred in Melbourne and they also have regional groups around Australia, although they don't have a direct presence in WA. They publish the monthly magazine The Bird Observer and the quarterly journal The Australian Bird Watcher. They organise many national research and conservation projects such as the Australian Bird Environment Fund, Threatened Bird Network, etc. |
