Harry Power was one of Victoria's most notorious bushrangers who had a reputation of holding up coaches single handed. As time went on, Power needed the assistance of someone younger to help him ply his trade of robbery-under-arms. This took him to Greta to his old friend Jack Lloyd, who had been an inmate of his in prison. Jack told him of his nephew, 15 year old Ned Kelly, and after some negotiation Power enlisted his services with the promise of large monetary rewards.

The first recorded incident in which Ned was associated with Harry occurred on the 27th May, 1869. On that day Harry and his apprentice were overlooking Dr Rowe’s horses on Mt Battery Station when they were spotted by one of the workers. On notification of their presence, the good Doctor thinking that they were probably up to no good, grabbed his gun and circled in behind the two unsuspecting miscreants. Without warning he fired at them and as the bullet landed in front of them, it blew dirt into their faces. Ned was in shock and froze but Harry soon roused the young lad and they managed to make their escape.

After having committed more than thirty four documented hold-ups, Harry Power’s career was finally ended when Ned Kelly’s uncle, Jack Lloyd, led the police to his hideout at the back of Glenmore Station’s homestead. Jack had been tempted by the 500 pounds reward offered for the bushranger's apprehension and it appears the reward may have been shared three ways between him and his two brother-in-laws, John and James Quinn.

Harry Power, (real name - Henry Johnson), was sentenced to fifteen years gaol for ‘robbery under arms’ and was finally released in 1885.

Harry’s life finally ended at Swan Hill on 10th October 1891 when he fell into the Murray River and drowned. He is buried in the Swan Hill cemetery.
