Welcome to the Genealogy Page of  Garry Mullins

I live in Cottesloe, a coastal suburb in Perth, Western Australia - the most isolated state capital city in the world. I have been researching my family, and the family of my wife, for over twenty years now with moderate success.

My MULLINS line comes from Victoria and Tasmania and, before that, from Sturminster Newton in Dorset. My great-great-grandfather, John, was born in Burin, Newfoundland in about 1817, whilst his father was cod-fishing there. In 1840, John Mullins was convicted of theft and transported to Van Diemen's Land. He left a wife and three young girls in England. He escaped from the penal settlement at Brown River and for two years roamed wild in the bush. He returned to captivity and eventually was released in 1853. He married an English convict, Maria Lowens, and they settled in Fingal, NE Tasmania. They had six children there. My main research lines are Mullins, Luttrell, Quin, Lowens, Brandon, Beauchamp and Rowe.

My wife's side of the family comes mainly from England and is better documented. The main research lines on her side are Hayward, Daley, Herbert, Sherwood, Burden, Brunskill, Wise and Rose.  Her Sherwood line is well researched as her great-great-grandfather was Frederick Sherwood Snr, founder of the famous Swan Brewery in Perth, Western Australia in 1857. A book, The Sherwood Papers, by Margaret Love, was published in 1997 and I prepared a 700-person descendants report for inclusion in the book.

I use Legacy v7.0 Deluxe as my main genealogical software program.

As of October 2008, I am a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) and am undertaking the Mullins One-Name Study.
