Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann was founded by musicians
in 1951 to promote Irish traditional music and the first Fleadh
Cheoil was organised in Mullingar.
Within a few years, this had become a National Festival attended by thousands of traditional musicians, singers and dancers from all over Ireland and soon also from overseas.
Branches of Comhaltas were organised and held classes in music, dancing, and also concerts and sessions.
Comhaltas is now a world-wide organisation, with branches in Britain, America, Europe, Asia and very vibrant branches in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra and more recently in Adelaide.
