Tony Braun Information Design (site) www.tbid.com | research
|
Author: Toby Braun (1995)
Abstract: Braun looks at the ability to use linearity as a
tool to enable users to decide how much information they want
to receive. He calls it the 'tell me more / tell me less'
concept.

|
Author: Michael Twyman. (1982)
Abstract: Twyman introduces the concept of verbal graphic
language and argues that to design effective verbal graphic
communication it must be first understood.

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web | research
|
Author: Morville, P. and Rosenfeld, L.
Abstract: This research is taken from the book Information
Architecture for the World Wide Web. It looks at information
architecture and the part it plays in web site planning -
particularly in addressing usability issues.
|
|
When bad design elements become the standard - Dr. Jakob
Nielsen, 14/11/1999, www.useit.com
/alertbox/991114.html | research
|
Author: Dr. Jakob Nielsen (1999)
Abstract: Nielsen discusses the importance of convention in
this Alert Box journal article. The article suggests the web
quickly creates defacto standards in design, and the penalty
for diverging from these standards is a reduction in usability
- sometimes substantially.
|
|
Designing Web Useability : The Practice of Simplicity (book)
Jakob Neilsen, 1999 | research
|
Author: Dr. Jakob Nielsen (1999)
Abstract: This research looks at two chapters (chapter 2 -
page design, and chapter 4 - site design) in Nielsen's latest
book 'Designing Web Usability: the Practice of Simplicity'.
The sections offer a number of rules aimed at assisting users
reach their goals within a website.

Yale Style Manual - Site Design, www.infor.med.yale.edu
/caim/manual/sites | research
|
Authors: Lynch and Horton (1997)
Abstract: This research is taken from the Yale Style Manual
for web site design, and suggests that for navigation to be
effective the planning of a site structure and heirarchy is
critical - and that uniformity and a structured approach will
aid navigation.
|
|
Kiss My Clown Pants, Patrick Lynch! (Yale Guide criticism),
www.robotwisdon.com
/web/klown.html
|
A criticism of the primary approach and theme of Lynch and
Horton in the Yale Style Manual. Argues that the web by nature
demands flexibility not accounted for in Lynch’s design and
structure rules.

Designing Web Navigation - Five tips for planning your space
by Jennifer Fleming - http://www.ahref.com/guides
/design/199808/0831jef.html | research
|
Author: Jennifer Fleming (1998)
Abstract: Fleming in this article puts forward the key issues
highlighted in her book 'Web Navigation: Designing the User
Experience' - that navigation should be fluid, simple and
focus on user experience and goals. Theories on the importance
of navigation providing user feedback are consistent with
those by Dr. Jakob Nielsen and Dr. Donald Norman.
|
|
Navigation in hyperspace study | research
|
Authors: McDonald, S. & Stevenson, R. J. (1998)
Abstract: A study on the effectiveness of hypertext, contents
lists and spacial maps in hypertext navigation and disorientation.
The study found that maps were far more effective in aiding
navigation for specific information than contents lists, and
that simple hypertext was the least effective of the three.
|
|
Context navigation support | research
|
Authors: Geldof, S. (1998)
Abstract: A descriptive article of contextual navigation methods
adopted in a software model called Ecran total. The technology
allows development of hyperlinking content based on user profiles
by trapping mouse clicks and turning them into preferences
then customising navigation content.
|
|
Designing effective web navigation - http://www.drue.com
/sxsw/page4.html | research
|
Author: Drue Miller (1999)
Abstract: Drue Miller's web site looks at a number of styles
of site navigation tools, including site maps. The range of
styles identified poses one or two interesting questions.
|
|
Web Navigation: Designing the User Experience (book) by Jennifer
Fleming, ed Richard Koman, 1998 | research
|
Authors: Fleming, J. (1998)
Abstract: This book sets itself up as a text book for designing
and planning the navigation and structure of a website. The
research here primarily looks at the sections on user centred
design, site architecture and interface and interaction design.

|
Thinking beyond web useability - An interview with Dr. Donald
Norman, President of Unext Learning Systems - webword.com/interviews.norman.html
| research
|
Interviewer: Rhodes, J. (1999)
Abstract: This is an interview with Dr. Donald Norman on the
issue of web site usability. Norman says usability is secondary
to the total experience given by a site, and that people will
accept poor usability if they get what they need.

|
|
First Principles - Bruce Tognazzini | research
|
Author: Bruce Tognazzini (1998)
Abstract: Tognazzini makes comparisons between graphical user
interfaces and web interfaces - and suggests GUI basic design
principles are as important on the web as anywhere.
|
|
IVALS Segments Profiles | research
|
Author: SRI (1999)
Abstract: The Internet Values and Lifestyles System (iVALS)
is based on the widely-used VALS system to define different
psychographic profiles of internet users for marketing purposes.
The conclusions are important in defining user goals and motivators.
|
|
Flame Wars - Mark Derry (book) | research
|
Author: Mark Dery (1994)
Abstract: Dery uses a short analysis to deconstruct the changes
in culture that can be expected through the growth of online
communication. He particularly illustrates the effects of
invented personalities that online communication affords users.
|
|
Long retrieval times | research
|
Authors: Ramsay, J., Barbesi, A. & Preece, J. (1998)
Abstract: A study of whether latency between requesting pages
and recieving pages on the world Wide Web influences user
perceptions. The study found that pages that loaded faster
were perceived as significantly more interesting.

|
Interviewer: Colin Bayers (1999)
Abstract: Jeff Bezos discusses his online consumerism ideology

|
Author: Poynter Institute/Stanford University (2000)
Abstract: This survey looks at the habits of 67 volunteer
