 Photos from 'The Griffith Collection'

The Griffith Collection' is an on going project by our Society involving the copying and displaying of photographs of historical interest.  The collection started in 1981 and now consists of over 9.000 photos.  We are at present indexing all the photographs.  Some of the photographs from the collection have been used for the books - Griffith & District Pioneer Families series and more recently Early Griffith & District - A Pictorial History.

A very small part of this collection will be shown here and a larger number in our Journal the Ibis Links.

Your enquiry for any photo reprints is most welcomed.

Bagtown

Originally a Public Works Department Camp was established in 1911.  Eventually became known as ‘Bagtown', though the early Settlers preferred the title 'Old Griffith'.  Many of the camps were made up of empty cement bags, left over from the construction of the channels, hence it became known as 'Bagtown'.  Bagtown was located 3km south of Griffith.

Some early storekeepers names were:  Andrew Martin, John Jacob, Carr,  J Bone, Selkirk, Pedley, Fallon, Chadwick, Carroll, Chandler, Thompson, Bottrill, Mrs  A. Cummings,  Livane, Bert Jacka, Mrs Milne's, M Cush.  First permanent Doctor - Watkins, Teacher Mr Hector Williams and Building Supervisor HA Taylor.

Bagtown Cemetery came into existence after Louis Montague was buried there in May 1912 and was declared a Reserve on 21 June 1918.  The last burial was Yvonne Pedley March 1922, aged 4 months.  It is believed that a total of 58 people are buried there
