The Standen family would appear to have it's origins in the vicinity of Ticehurst, Sussex and Goudhurst, Kent. The name is often interpreted as Stan = old English "stone", Denu = old English "valley", but denu means hollow and was used to describe the woodland clearings used to raise pigs (often named for the manor to which it belonged or descriptive, Hollydene, Hazeldene, etc.).
Therefore Standen was a stoney clearing used to raise pigs.
I would like to create a resource for all Standens to aid and share research. Anyone wishing to participate please send me either a link to another interesting site or a gedfile. As a 2 finger typist I cannot collate information in any other form.
