Is it a Campbell?

This engine has a 3 7\8 inch bore x 6 inch stroke with hot tube ignition. It looks like a Campbell circa 1895, but it has no writing or numbers on it. A previous owner told me his father made it in the Islington Railway workshops in South Australia. This could be right, as many parts on it were new, but not complete, and other parts were worn. So I believe it could have been a damaged Campbell that the workshop were rebuilding and never finished.

The hot tube inlet valve assembly was incomplete. It was replaced by casting a new one from melting down lawn mower cylinders in a cupola type furnace. The furnace was made from firebricks with a vacuum cleaner for blast.
