I have worked with RTAP for about the last 6 years. This work has been with natural gas scada systems. The product has matured into a very usable real time database tool. HP has or is just about to release the NT version of RTAP (up to this point in time it has been available on UNIX platforms only). The unix version has more available tools. That is a schematic builder, data historian, etc. The NT version from what I understand will depend more on third party user interface tools and add ins. HP has also changed there pricing structure on RTAP to make it more competitive with the PC world. The RTAP system works well in a scada application. I have worked on systems for 500 to 10000 database points that poll rtus at rates of every 15 seconds to 30 seconds. The major problem that I have run into is that of system redundancy. Many customers want fast redundancy switch over (on the order of 30 seconds or less). The standard RTAP product has not been able to meet those switch over speeds. I have worked on projects that have dedicated man years of custom programming time to meet those faster redundancy switch over speeds on RTAP. If switch over time on the order minutes is OK for redundancy then little extra work is need to integrate RTAP redundancy. RTAP has a users group. There home page is http://www.rug.org . Mike, I have used RTAP for over 6 years. Initially, it was a platform for developing SCADA systems. It has developed into a package that can be configured to provide a SCADA solution without any programming. The API is also available if you would like to customize it a bit more or if you need to extend it. It has a very powerful hiearchical database and scales well for large systems. It is mainly used in the oil/gas, and electrical fields. We used it to control water distribution systems. Regards, Richard Yee
