The Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) has established a museum to record the evolution of the Regiment from its early days as a company of the Royal Australian Infantry, a company of the Royal Australian Regiment to its present regimental establishment.
The Museum with its collection is managed by the Special Air Service Historical Foundation (SASHF) whose mission is to conscientiously record, skilfully preserve and professionally display the Heritage of Australia’s Special Air Service (SAS).

Brigadier R.D.F. Lloyd, OBE, MC, (RL) then the Honorary Colonel of SASR opened the first section of the Museum, on the third of September I987.
This original collection was put together by Major Joe Urquhart, Corporal Steve Danaher and WO1 Frank Sykes, OAM. Ex-members and other interested groups largely donated the exhibits.

Weapons Display

Further development and extension of the Museum was accomplished in 1988, when with the assistance of 22 Construction Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers, the breezeway was enclosed to provide the second room, the Eastern Room. In this room the various specialisations of the Regiment are displayed.

In 2000, the first third of a Lysaght Hut was erected to store and display larger items of the collection including Long Range Patrol Vehicles, Special Purpose Counter Terrorist Vehicles and a Vietnam vintage, UH1B Iroquois helicopter.
It is intended to expand the Lysaght, known colloquially as ‘The Shed’, to its full size of 30m x 18m as funds become available.

The Shed

The collection is not complete at this stage, however, plans are in place to display equipment already obtained but held in storage and to mount displays at other venues such as the Army Museum in Fremantle and in the SAS Association (ASASA) ‘House’.
The Foundation is also in the process of publishing a small newsletter, aptly titled "Happy Wanderer" for periodic mailout to ex members of the Regiment to inform them of progress and to help obtain further information to help fill in the 'gaps'.

To View the Historical Collection

At present the Museum, which is located inside Campbell Barracks, is open to the public, within limited hours, on a nominated day around ANZAC Day, on the Unit Birthday in September and during other significant regimental activities throughout the year. For organized groups, bookings may be requested by writing to Base Operations, SASR, Campbell Barracks, Swanbourne, WA, 6010.

The SASHF is run entirely by volunteers from within the Regiment, ex members of SAS and other dedicated personnel with a deep interest in preserving the history of the Regiment. With extremely limited resources, they not only maintain the collection at its current standard but are also constantly expanding and upgrading it.
