The Health and Physical Education Learning Area focuses on a holistic concept of health and physical well-being. The lower school programs recognise the physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of the individual. In Health Education, students develop an understanding of health concepts that will enable them to make informed decisions for a healthy lifestyle, while through active participation in the Physical Education Learning area students are encouraged to develop attitudes and values that are consistent with lifelong participation in sport and physical activities.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
To provide students with many opportunities to develop their movement and game skills while improving their level of fitness they are offered a wide range of Sports and activities in the Year 7 - 12 Physical Education programs. The sports selected enable students to be confident in their participation in the IGSSA competition and also in other sports and activities that are available in the general community.

In the Year 10 program more emphasis is placed on game play across a wider range of activities. Students have the opportunity to select one sport from each of the three blocks of options listed below. In Term 3 all students participate in SEPED Netball which enables the students to develop leadership, show iniative and take ownership of their learning while developing Netball skills and game awareness.

YEAR 11 & 12 PHYSICAL RECREATION OPTIONS
All Upper School students are timetabled for one period of Physical Recreation each week. Students select from a variety of sports and recreational activities, many of which are not covered in mainstream Physical Education classes. The range of options available in 2008 include the following activities: aerobics, aquarobics, badminton, basketball, beach activities, cricket, dance, fitness classes, fitboxing, football, golf, indoor hockey, kayaking, netball, pilates, polo ball, power walking, self-defense, spin classes, softball, soccer, table tennis, tennis, touch rugby, ultimate frisbee and yoga.
Some of the options require an additional fee to cover instruction costs, equipment and facility hire; however, most options are free of charge. The option fees are charged to the first semester account.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION - Year 9 and 10 Option
In Years 9 and 10 students may select a course of Outdoor Education as part of their optional subjects. Iona offers an exciting and challenging Outdoor Education Program in both years. These courses cover a variety of outdoor pursuits and include both practical and theory components. Through their active participation in the program, students are encouraged to develop new practical skills, self-confidence, leadership skills and respect for the environment. To meet the course requirements, students must be proficient swimmers and able to complete a 20 minute survival swim. They must also have a moderate to high level of personal fitness.
The program includes the following activities:
Year 9 activities include: body boarding, first aid, fishing, orienteering, snorkeling, team work and co-operation, and wall climbing.
Year 10 activities include: archery, environmental appreciation, kayaking, rafting, surfing and camp craft activities (Including minimal impact practices, tenting and survival skills).
The Year 10 program culminates in a camping experience where students are expected to practically apply the knowledge, skills and strategies they have studied in class to the bush environment.
SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION OPTION - Year 10
The aim of this course is to develop students’ practical and theoretical abilities beyond that of the compulsory Physical Education program. It is designed primarily as a stepping stone for those students intending to enroll in the Physical Education Studies WACE courses in Year 11 and 12. Topics to be covered will include the following: Learning Movement Skills, Fitness and Dimensions of Physical Activity, Ways to improve Physical Fitness, Roles and Positions in Team Games and Coaching and Officiating and how Mental Skills can affect performance.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDIES
Physical Education Studies provides an excellent grounding for students who wish to be involved in any aspect of Physical Education or who have a personal interest in sport and wish to improve and develop their practicalskills and knowledge in this area.
The course looks in depth at various aspects of Physical Education and provides students with the opportunity to become better informed community members with particular regard to fitness and health, physical activity and sport. Involvement in this subject will foster the development of the student as a performer, umpire and trainer in the sporting and recreational community. Both theoretical and practical units are covered in each course, with many theoretical topics having practical application.
Students may select from the following courses:
- 1APES/ 1BPESwhich will lead to 1CPES/1DPES in Year 12. This is a wholly school assessed subject.
- 1APES/1BPES which will lead into 2APES/2BPES in Year 12 for WACE examinations.
- 2APES/2BPES which will lead to 3APES/3BPES in Year 12 for WACE examinations and is designed for students who have a good academic standing.
Summary of Physical Education Studies Units
STAGE 1
- 1APES: Developing an understanding about personal participation in physical activities.
- 1BPES: Participation with peers to enhance an understanding of self and others in physical activity
- 1CPES: Building a personal profile as an athlete in different sporting contexts.
- 1DPES: Extending your personal profile as an athlete, comparing yourself with other athletes and setting personal goals to improve performance.
STAGE 2
- 2APES: Looking at oneself in a sporting social context and exploring personal potential. Examining different learning contexts that enhance performance.
- 2BPES: Building on knowledge gained in 2APES to realize personal potential in sport and physical activity.
STAGE 3
- 3APES: Understand how integrated planning is essential to enhance sporting performance and participation.
- 3BPES: Examine sport in the future with particular reference to future participation and performance in physical activity. Investigate issues in sport and refine solutions.
YEAR 11
Students may select from the following courses:
- 1APES/1BPES, which will lead to 1CPES/1DPES in Year 12. This is a wholly school-assessed course.
- 1CPES/1DPES, which will lead to 2APES/2BPES in Year 12 for WACE examinations.
- 2APES/2BPES, which will lead to 3APES/3BPES in Year 12 for WACE examinations. This course is designed for students who have a good academic standing in Health and Physical Education, English and Science.
All of the above courses cover aspects of the following topics:

- Correct techniques in selection of physical activities

YEAR 12
Students may select from the following courses:
- 1CPS/ 1DPES
- 2APES/2BPES. This is for WACE examinations and is designed for students who have a good academic standing. Student must have previously studied 1C/1D in Year 11.
- 3APES/3BPES. This is for WACE examinations and is designed for students who have a good academic standing. Student must have previously studied 2A/2B in Year 11.
CONTENT
Each of the topics covered in Year 11 will be developed in greater depth in Year 12.
PRACTICAL CONTENT
One or two sports will be selected from the following:

The activities selected will depend on student needs, teacher expertise and available facilities.
Stage 2 and Stage 3 WACE Grades
Student grades will be determined from school based assessments (50%) and external examinations (50%). The school based grade will be determined from the marks obtained from the three categories listed under Assessment - see above. The external mark will consist of: Written exam 70%, Practical test 30%.
Students will be given the opportunity to select a sport of their choice for the external public examination; however, they must participate in an IGSSA sport during the year as part of the requirements of the course.
