The Technology & Enterprise Learning Area encompasses vital skills and knowledge that will assist students in all facets of their personal and working lives.

The Technology and Enterprise Learning Area provides courses suitable for students interested in Tertiary studies in Commerce and Information Technology as well as a range of TAFE options in Hospitality, Tourism, Fashion, and Design.

If a student wishes to complete a Technology and Enterprise Learning Area Year 11/12 Course of Study to University or TAFE entry level, it is strongly recommended that the relevant Year 8, 9 and 10 courses are undertaken successfully to provide a sound basis for the Year 11/12 Course.

YEAR 11-12 COURSES

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE (ATAR)
This course involves the preparation and analysis of accounts for a small business including GST. Students speak with  accountants about careers and use accounting software to prepare reports.

Career Opportunities
Although a valuable life skill for any student, Accounting provides an excellent foundation for the study of Commerce at University or TAFE. You might see yourself as a Strategic Business Planner, stockbroker, auditor, taxation specialist, or forensic accountant. Other career pathways for Accounting students may include bookkeepers, account and payroll clerks, bank managers or clerks, financial advisors, business managers, general clerical assistants or being a self-employed small business owner.


Perth Zoo 2010 007.JPGAPPLIED INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY – MULTIMEDIA (ATAR)
Applied Information Technology involves the application of computer technologies to living in the community and working in industry and business environments. For example students shoot footage at Perth venues (such as the Perth Zoo) and prepare a webpage proposal. Students use a variety of computer applications from the Adobe Design Suite to create their webpages, radio advertisements and animated video.

Career Opportunities
Career opportunities exist in areas such as web page design, multimedia design, developing ecommerce strategies, developing computer models to predict future events, plus a range of technical and programming applications. May assist with study of Information Technologies at university or TAFE level, but will benefit any student regardless of what workplace or career pathway is chosen.


DESIGN GRAPHICS (ACCESS)
In the Design Graphics course, students develop a competitive edge for current and future industry and employment markets.  Students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to understand design principles and processes, analyse problems and devise innovative strategies through projects. 
This course includes elements of digital media, interactive media, graphics technology, technical graphics and visual communication. Whilst these fields share a common link through digital technology, graphics also includes traditional two dimensional design media.


CAREER AND ENTERPRISE (ACCESS)
This course aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to become proactive managers of their own career development.  Constant change is the only certainty in our modern world and this course helps students to identify their strengths, talents and abilities and embrace lifelong learning. At the completion of the course students will understand how to make the most of ever-changing employment opportunities.


CHILDREN, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY - CARING FOR OTHERS (ACCESS)
During the year the class has to organize and run a number of play-group sessions. These usually take place at the Iona Kindergarten. The students organize activities for the children and prepare and serve the children morning or afternoon tea after singing 'grace'. The students have a great time interacting with the younger children and they love the older girls visiting and playing with them. The students also research careers which involve working with children and discuss these many guest speakers who outline the types of things their job involves. Current issues involving children are also explored including how the media portrays youth issues and support networks within the community.


MATERIALS DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY – TEXTILES (ACCESS)
 The Materials, Design & Technology course is a practical course with a focus on Fashion and Textiles. It allows students choice in the exploration and use of textiles for designing and manufacturing clothing and other textile items.
Students are introduced to principles and practices of design, learning about fundamentals of design and concepts related to designing clothes for themselves and others. They learn to communicate various aspects of the design process within the structure of making what they design.
Throughout the design process, students learn the origins, classifications, properties and suitability of materials. Students are introduced to a range of technology skills, and develop these skills as they work through their design projects. Students are encouraged to pursue their creativity and have the opportunity to showcase their work in the Apex Teenage Fashion Awards.
The Materials, Design and Technology course aims to prepare all students for a future in a technological and material world by providing the foundation for lifelong learning about how materials are developed and used.


YEAR 7-10 COURSES

BUSINESS
These courses are designed to give students hands on experience in the world of commerce. These skills will benefit students regardless of their career direction and include technology, marketing, budgeting, and finance skills.

Year 10 Business Enterprise develops students business and problem solving skills by running a small business venture at school. They apply creative, marketing, manufacturing and financial skills and knowledge. In addition, students learn to manage the books for a small cash enterprise, using software such as MYOB. In this course students will learn concepts and skills for the Accounting and Finance course in Year 11/12.
In Year Ten Business Technology, students develop their knowledge of technology in the commercial world. Some of the areas covered include:

  • Ergonomics
  • Webpage design
  • Network design
  • Advanced Spreadsheets and Databases

In these courses students will learn concepts and skills for the Applied Information Technology (Multimedia) WACE course in Year 11/12.
Year Nine Students use a variety of technologies to create innovative products and learn to present information professionally.

  • Database design
  • Professional Presentations
  • Careers for Women in Business

Year Seven and Eight The courses involve the use technology for the management of every day personal and business tasks eg creating a budget when moving away from home.


DESIGN & MULTIMEDIA
Year Ten students focus on design basics – the elements and principles of design. They are introduced to basic production skills and processes, materials and technologies. Students:

  • Investigate subcultures
  • Produce visual concepts for song lyrics, character designs, and animations

In this course students will learn concepts and skills for the Design (Graphics) Access Learning course in Year 11/12.

Year Nine students refine their software skills. Some of the areas covered include:

  • Graphics and logo design
  • Animation
  • Website
  • Digital Video
  • Interactive portfolio

Year Seven and Eight Students develop their confidence with using hardware and software for graphic design.


FOODS
In Year Ten, students gain an understanding of the social aspects of food. Students study the formal menu and its modern variations. They learn the necessary skills to design menus, select ingredients, balance budgets, and prepare and serve a variety of foods suitable for different functions. This is a practical, creative environment. Students follow the design process and practice as many food preparation skills as possible. In addition, they cater for two functions within the school community.
This course offers students in Year Nine the opportunity to creatively prepare and present food from around the world. Students complete a broad program that includes applying the design process, knowledge of ingredients, use of equipment, skills for designing recipes and menus, development of food preparation skills, standards for safety and hygiene, the food industry, and social aspects of foods.
Year Eight students have the opportunity to experience the practical and creative aspects of foods. Students are introduced to the design process, knowledge of ingredients, use of equipment, standards for safety and hygiene, skills for recipe design and food preparation skills.
Year Seven students enjoy being introduced to the technology skills involved in food preparation whilst cooking healthy snacks as an introduction to nutrition.



 FAMILY AND COMMUNITY
This course gives Year Ten students the opportunity to study human growth and development in two important stages - early childhood and adolescence. Students learn to care for babies and young children and explore their own place in the world as teenagers. They also investigate contemporary issues that impact on children, teenagers and families. In this practical course, students participate in various creative and enterprising projects making items suitable for children and adolescents.

In this course students will learn concepts and skills for the Children, Family and Community (Caring) course in Year 11/12.


TEXTILES 
In Year Ten, the aim is to provide students with an understanding of the practical and creative aspects of textiles. Students study fashion design and sketching, fabric knowledge, use of recycled fabrics and construction techniques suitable for clothing and craft products.
In these courses students will learn concepts and skills for the Materials Design and Technology (Textiles) course in Year 11/12.
In Year Nine students complete a broad program that includes applying the design process, fabric knowledge, dyeing and printing fabrics, standards for safety, use of equipment, development of fashion and design skills and development of construction skills. The course is designed to cater for students who enjoy learning in a practical, creative environment. Students practice a variety of creative techniques.
Year Eight students are given the opportunity to experience the practical and creative aspects of textiles. They are introduced to the design process, fabric knowledge, use of equipment, standards for safety and design and construction skills.

Year Seven students embark on a learning journey to gain confidence in basic skills in machine and hand sewing, by applying these in the design and production of a decorated cushion project. 


INDUSTRIAL ARTS
In this course, Year 10 students design and complete projects such as a wooden ornamental figure, carved CD box, magazine rack, clock, metal jewellery and a composite design roject. This course covers the following areas:

  • Woodwork and Related Materials
  • Metalwork, Plastics and Materials
  • Technical Graphics
  • Computer-Assisted Drawing

Students spend the majority of class time in the workshops and are provided with the opportunity to gain confidence in using industrial type machines, tools and equipment. Students create several construction items using the technology process.

In these courses students will learn concepts and skills for the Career & Enterprise course in Year 11/12.
