The Men of Iona is officially a sub-committee of the Iona Parents & Friends Association. The group commits itself to two goals – ‘social’ and ‘service’. The group is open to all dads from both the College and Primary School.
From a social point of view, we meet at the Albion Hotel, Stirling Highway, Cottesloe between 7.00 pm and 8.00 pm on the first Thursday night of each month for a drink. This is purely a social night to meet other parents from Iona over a drink. You don’t have to make it every month, just as often as you can and for as long as you would like.
We also meet once a term for activities such as bare foot lawn bowls at the Mosman Park Bowling Club, ten pin Bowling and golf. The “Bragging Rights” trophy, which is a scale model Komatsu “Haul Pak” truck with engraved plaque, is keenly contested between the College and Primary dads. The winning school then displays the trophy in the reception area.
Dads can also be involved in "Dads on Canteen" days (College only), which are hugely successful and are great fun to be involved in. This is where we put on a sausage sizzle or help out with pizzas for lunches. This is separate from the running of the canteen. Look out for dates in The Ionian newsletter.
From a service point of view, we help out with school events such as the Primary School Sundowner, the P&F Quiz Night, student social dances/concerts and Parent Information Evenings.
Whilst we ask for help in supporting the Men of Iona and the Parents & Friends Association, we estimate that the total time spent would only be about two hours per term. You need only be involved as much or as little as you like and the rewards are lasting friendships and experiences. Regular updates on Men of Iona activities and events are placed in The Ionian and the Primary School newsletter, so keep an eye out for these.
