Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Centre is committed to acknowledging and valuing the contributions of its diverse team. Through its integrated service model, the Centre ensures clients have access to a full range of expertise offered by its multidisciplinary team. The Board of Management and Staff come from several different cultural backgrounds. Of particular importance is the contribution made by the Centre’s bilingual workers who provide unique access to diverse communities and expertise in working with them.
Judy who has been the Chairperson since 2007, is an experienced and qualified youth work practitioner. Judy currently teaches in and coordinates the Youth Work Studies and Community Studies programs at Edith Cowan University in the Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSci) in the School of Psychology and Social Science, Joondalup. Judy’s educational background includes a BSocSci (Youth Work), a Masters of Social Science (Human Services), a Graduate Certificate in Education (Tertiary Teaching) and a PhD (Human Services). Her areas of interest are young women, family violence and youth work practice; refugee and migrant women who have experienced violence or trauma; the professionalization of youth work; and management within the human and community services sector. Judy is married with two adult daughters, three grandsons and one granddaughter. Chantal has been involved on the Management Committee at Ishar for over ten years at different times, in various committee positions. Chantal completed a Social Science degree at Murdoch University in 1992, majoring in Women’s Studies and Politics, Philosophy and Sociology. She is currently working at Ruah Community Services, managing the Women’s Support Service and has been in that role since July 2006. Before that, Chantal worked at Centrecare for over 9 years. Pokua has had extensive experience as an Organisational Learning Consultant and Workplace Trainer. During the last 13 years she has been actively engaged in the implementation of Competency Based Training in the Federal Government and Western Australia public sectors. She has also managed a number of high profile curriculum and research projects in the Vocational Education and Training sector. She has a passion for working with practitioners to translate national training policies into practical strategies that improve outcomes and prospects for disadvantaged learners. Pokua holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in French and Spanish from the University of Ghana and is also a qualified Workplace Trainer and Assessor. She is on the Management Board of two not–for–profit organisations: People Learn Productions, which develops multimedia products for people with print disabilities and Ishar, a multicultural community-based health service for women and their families. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, movies, embroidery and beadwork. MC Elected Member: Dr. Lucy Morris Dr Lucy Morris has been on Ishar’s board since 2007 and is the CEO of Community Vision Inc., an NGO providing community-based human services in Perth. She was awarded her PhD at Curtin University of Technology, Perth in 2007 after exploring leadership, ethics and spirituality in charities. She has a Master of Philosophy and a 1st Class B.A. Hons from Manchester University, U.K. She is an Adjunct Professor, School of Business, University of Notre Dame Australia and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. MC Elected Member: Dawn Mielens Dawn Mielens is a Social Worker and a Professional Counselor. Her role as a Social Worker is to empower people, to help them discover their strengths and areas where support is needed, to direct them to the right kind of resources for their particular needs, to guide them in relationships, in life skills, to mediate, to advocate and much more. Her specialty is grief and loss and relationships. She is experienced in all areas of adoption, working with people and their families where there is a special need, in child protection, in aged care, in the justice system, as well as with community groups. She also runs training sessions on family violence, communication skills, budgeting, protective behaviors, suicide prevention, dealing with aggressive clients/work colleagues, and meditation. MC Elected Member: Tara Ludlow Tara Ludlow has been on Ishar’s board since 2007 and is Manager of Education and Policy at Carers WA, where she has worked since May 2000. Tara has an educational background in Psychology, Adult Education and Business, and has worked with survivors of sexual assault/abuse, young people at risk, supported accommodation staff and for the past 8 years, developing and providing support services for family carers across WA. Tara is passionate about meaningful and accessible support systems for all community members who may need additional assistance. Andrea Creado began her career in India as a Counsellor. She has a Master Degree in Human Development and a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology from India. In India Andrea worked across several educational institutes, non–government and private organizations as a Counsellor. She arrived in Australia in October 2001 and began working as a part–time Project Officer with the Ethnic Communities Centre of WA in September 2002. In October 2002, Andrea began volunteering with Ishar and since then has worked at Ishar in several capacities as a Project Officer and later as Service Manager. In November 2006 Andrea took over the role as Ishar’s Acting Director and in February 2007 formally took over the role as Director. Andrea has completed several educational courses in Australia including a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Murdoch University and is currently enrolled in the Psychology Honours program at Edith Cowan University. Andrea has two children and loves to cook, read and walk in her free time.
