Health Services
The Health Services are funded by the National Women’s Health Program, directed through the Department of Health, Child & Community Health Directorate. This funding enables Ishar to offer a Multicultural Counselling Service, a Clinical Service, Health Education/Health Promotion Services and an Information and Referral Service.
What does the Multicultural Counselling Service involve?
- individual counselling
- group sessions
- self referral is available
All areas of mental and emotional health are covered.
A free interpreter service is available through Translating & Interpreting Services (TIS) when required.
What does the Clinical Service involve?
- a Well Women’s Health Clinic run by a female GP one day a week
- A female Physiotherapist conducts exercise classes and physical activity sessions each week
- community nurse/educator offers clinical information and referral
- self referral is available
A free interpreter service is available through Translating & Interpreting Services (TIS) when required.
What does the Education/Health Promotion Services involve?
- Implementation of programs for specific cultural communities which aim to enhance health awareness and health behaviours
- Community and in-house displays
- Participation in community cultural events to promote women’s health issues
- Involvement with other organisations in implementing one-day seminars or workshops for community women and/or health professionals
- Provision of intercultural awareness information sessions to health professionals when invited
What is the Information/Referral Service?
It is an ongoing service which caters for all the programs at Ishar. All staff members are involved with giving information to clients/service providers and/or referring them to other agencies or health professionals, depending on their need. The information/referral service can take place formally or informally.
Multicultural Carers Support & Skills Development Program
The program is funded by the Department of Health WA, Office of Mental Health. The funding enables Ishar to provide a program for carers from 18 years or older, male and female from CaLD communities. The program caters to carers throughout the metropolitan region.
What are the aims of the program?
- To provide a metro–wide CaLD Carer Support Service that focuses on the emotional, social, cultural, religious and linguistic needs of the carer
- To implement and evaluate appropriate innovative CaLD carer support programs in other states
- To represent CaLD carers interests and strengthen networks and liaisons with key agencies in relation to carer support and skills development
The program is hosted by Ishar in partnership with West Australian Transcultural Mental Health Centre and Ethnic Disability Advocacy Centre.
Who can access our services?
- Do you care for someone in your family who has a mental illness?
- Are you from a migrant or refugee background?
- Do you sometimes feel low and need someone to talk to?
- Would you like to get support and meet other people in similar situations?
What programs are available?
- Group programs – exercise classes, art, meditation, creative imagery and many more. Special programs for children are also organised
- Personal counselling – Carers can avail of personal counselling to talk about their issues and get comfort during trying times
- Information sessions – Monthly information sessions on mental health topics such as eating disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, autism and more. These information sessions are delivered by experts in the field and are accompanied by an information display
- Training – Regular training programs are delivered to help carers learn new skills to carry out their caring role in a more effective manner. Bilingual workers are also trained to do outreach work with multicultural communities.
