Instructions for Adding / Upgrading RAM in a Sony Vaio PCG-6HCP Laptop
For other models of laptop, try http://repair4laptop.org/
There are 2 locations for RAM. If your laptop only has one RAM module, it will be accessed under the cover on the bottom of the laptop (Steps 1 to 5). The 2nd RAM socket is accessed from under the keyboard (steps 6 onwards).
1. Shutdown the computer
2. Turn it over and remove the screw labeled A circled (sorry about the blurry photo) and remove the cover
3. Remove the cover
4. Remove the original RAM (push the metal clips outwards) and replace it with the new RAM
5. Replace the cover and screw A.
2nd RAM Socket
6. Remove the 2 screws labeled B in the first photo in these instructions
7. Along the top edge of the keyboard, there are 3 very small latches which keep the keyboard in place (they might not be exactly where the circles are in the following photo - but they'll be close). While very gently levering one top corner of the keyboard upwards with a small screwdriver, using another very small screwdriver, push the spring-loaded latched upwards (towards the top edge of the laptop). Start with the latch closest to the corner you are gently levering up, and work away to the furthest latch until you should be able to lift the keyboard up and fold it forward (as shown in the next photo).
8. Remove the 2 screws from the recesses circled and remove the thin metal cover.
9. Insert your new RAM module.
10. Replace the thin metal cover and 2 securing screws
11. Fold the keyboard back, locate the lugs along the bottom edge, then press the top edge down to clip it in place
12. Turn the laptop over and replace the 2 screws removed in Step 6
All Done
