STATE TEAM
The ever popular team from the University College of Dublin paid a return visit to Western Australia and a very heavy schedule was provided by the Soccer Federation. The Balga Soccer Club always the first to help out in situations like this came forward and provided billets for the visitors during their stay. They arrived on 1st August and were immediately swept off to Balga but only for a short time for the following day they travelled to Geraldton where they played a local select side where the visitors had a narrow victory.
On Monday it was off to Kalbarri to see the sights and the Gorges. Those travelling with the team could not help but notice the surprise and wonderment they expressed at the vastness of our country. It was back to Perth on the Tuesday and short rest. On Wednesday evening they played the State Team and although losing 6-2 never once gave up the ghost.
On Thursday night they were back on the Velodrome again to face the Balga State League side who of course by this time were friends. Unfortunately the Leprechauns had not been seen around and many of the players were carrying injuries. Prior to the game on Thursday the Patron of the Soccer Federation had kindly invited the whole party to lunch at Parliament House. Friday the City of Perth Council kindly gave a civic reception for all those involved.
Saturday they were off on another trip this time to Albany where they were again billetted and made very welcome. They played the Albany representative side on Sunday afternoon and began their journey back to Perth early on Monday morning stopping on the way at the Mandurah beach home of former Soccer Federation President Mick Lee where they savoured a typical Aussie barbeque. They finally flew out of Perth on the afternoon of Tuesday 12th August and there were a few wet eyes from both sides as they finally went through the departure lounge.
