Ella Mastrantonio was only 16 when she was handed an 'A' international debut for Australia in 2008. The midfielder started out with Fremantle Spirit and refined her technique with a couple of years in the National Training Centre program. She first wore national team colours in January 2007 in the Under-17's friendly with South Korea and over the next couple of years represented Australia over a dozen times at youth level.
It was while playing club football with Cockburn City that Mastrantonio gained her Matildas debut in June 2008, coming on as a second half substitute against Japan at the Asian Cup finals. Further outings following in October at the ASEAN Football Federation Championships in Vietnam where Australia lifted the trophy with successive wins over Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar and the host nation.
Mastrantonio's national league debut for Perth Glory Women arrived just days later, and over the course of the first two W-League seasons featured regularly for her hometown club. Released in 2010, she headed east to play a key role in the midfield at Melbourne Victory.
