Adair arrived from Northern Ireland in 1949, initially linking up with Victoria Park and over eleven seasons he'd don the colours of North Perth, Maccabeans, Azzurri and Swan Athletic. Along the way he won First Division titles with North Perth (1952) and Swan Athletic (1957) and collected three successive Ledger Medal's - awarded to the league's fairest and best player - in 1953 (North Perth), 1954 (Maccabeans) and 1955 (Azzurri).
Adair had been in Perth less than a year when he made his State debut as an 18-year old against an Australian Test XI. Between 1950 and 1960 he played every State game, gaining selection on twenty-three occasions with eleven of those as captain. He was in charge of West Australia when it finished runner-up to New South Wales in the 1954 Inter-States carnival, at which he was named the tournament's 'Best Player'. In 1995 Adair played for the State twice against South Africa, and later turned out against touring clubs Fenencvaros (Hungary) and Blackpool (England).
In August 1953 Adair made his first appearance in Australia colours against China, with his 'A' international debut arriving the following year against New Zealand. He became the first player from WA to captain Australia when he lead the side out against touring Austrian club Vienna Rapid in August 1955, an honour he again achieved again four years later against Scottish club Hearts. His second 'A' international appearance came against South Africa in 1955, and in mid-1958 Adair was part of the Socceroos squad which toured New Zealand where he played seven of the ten games. A serious knee injury ended Adair's playing days in 1960.
