Overall WA Soccer Standings 1983 - 2000

This page shows the unofficial overall standings of WA teams since 1983, the teams shown are all the 24 clubs that played under Soccer West Coast in 2000, plus any teams in the WAASSA Premier Division and First Division that played under Soccer West Coast anytime during the 1983 to 2000 period.

To check what formula we used to determine these standings, look at the bottom of this page.

As you can see, Perth finished as the best team in the 1983 - 2000 period, with 795 points under the system we used, not far behind was the Stirling Lions, who received 793 points, if it wasn't for their recent poor seasons and then slipping down a division, they would have won easily. Floreat Athena was also close behind with 789 points and Cockburn City (which played under the name of Spearwood Dalmatinac for most of the period) finished in the top four.

(The table may be slow loading)

A few things that we had to do to determine the standings were:

1. Some clubs have merged during the period, in order to achieve a figure in pervious seasons before the merger, we used the points of the team that finished highest.

For example, the Leeming Strikers was a merger between Melville Alemannia and Canning Corinthian in 1993, every season prior to 1993, Alemannia finished higher than Corinthian, so we used Alemannia's figures.

Another example, Perth (Italia) was formed from a merger between Perth Azzurri and East Fremantle Tricolore in 1988. In 1983 we would use Azzurri's figure, because they finished higher, in 1984 Tricolore finished higher, so we would use their figure for that season, and so on.

2. In 1992 we had 2 semi-professional organisations, SFWA and the PSL, to get a figure for SFWA teams during that year, we put them and the PSL old Second Division under the 2nd tier.

3. The number of divisions and the number of clubs in each league has changed over the years, for instance the 1st tier (Premier League) has had as few as 8 teams and as many as 14 teams since 1983. The 2nd tier and 3rd tier of WA soccer has had as many as 16 teams. But since in most years each league has had 12 teams, we gave teams that finished in 13th to 16th position in their division the same ranking as the 12th team received.

4. 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1998 uses the championship play-offs for overall positions in the 1st tier.

5. Here is the point system we used, the team which finishes 1st in the 1st tier gets 47 points, so for example, Fremantle City won the league in the 1st tier (Premier League) in 2000, so they got 47 points for that. Floreat Athena finished 9th in 2000, so they got 39 points and so on.

Teams that hadn't yet formed early in the period, or teams that either started in the amateurs or dropped into the amateurs gets only 1 point for each season they didn't compete in Soccer West Coast.
