Aliens vs Predator - Requiem

Although rated as a disappointment by most die-hard Predator fans, Aliens Vs Predator did well enough at the box-office to ensure the inevitable sequel. The question is, will it surpass the first movie and bring back the original feel of Predator that we're all hoping for?

Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (AvP2)
Christmas 2007

As I previously stated in the introduction: although rated as a disappointment by most die-hard Predator fans, Alien Vs Predator did well enough at the box-office to ensure the inevitable sequel. But is there really any hope for a decent movie adaption for the Alien and Predator franchise, or has the enormous beast that is Fox completely succumbed to the 'typical Hollywood blockbuster' style of "movie" making?

Since a 'leaked' script of the proposed Alien Vs Predator 2 appeared in a review on the AICN website (full story below) there was almost nothing but dissent, disappointment and even pure anger from the old-school Predator and Alien fans. Myself, I didn't see the script OR the review (not wanting to spoil what expectations I already had) so I'm not one to say how bad it actually was.

Thankfully, it seems that the 'leaked script' was either a red herring to test the waters and see the response to an Aliens Vs Predator 2, or Fox decided to listen to the masses of fans and rethink their script choices. Either way, you could almost hear the sigh of relief from thousands of fans when the 'Pearl In, Texas Out' story below was released.

With the rumour-mill running hot and disinformation abound, I thought it best to wait for 'concrete' information regarding the next installment of AvP -- and the following seems to be the final word on the movie:

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is the upcoming sequel to 2004's Alien vs. Predator film. Filming began on September 25, 2006 in Vancouver with Tom Woodruff, Jr. and Alec Gillis from Amalgamated Dynamics handling the special effects (as they did for the previous installment) and Daniel Pearl as director of photography. The Brothers Strause (Colin and Greg Strause) have directed the movie from a script by Shane Salerno. Steven Pasquale and Reiko Aylesworth will play leading roles in the film which is scheduled for release in December 2007. The film is expected to be rated R as opposed to the PG-13 rating of the original.

THEY'RE INVADING THE REAL WORLD THIS TIME

May 5, 2005 - It's confirmed: Alien Vs. Predator was successful enough to warrant a sequel. 20th Century Fox's Tom Rothman confirmed to Sci Fi Wire at the Saturn Awards that the studio is already planning AVP 2, following the success of the first one.

Rothman spilled some minor plot details on the crossover sequel, stating that it would not be set in a remote location like Antarctica (the locale of the first AVP) or space (like the Alien series). "In the new Alien Vs. Predator they will finally actually really come to our world."

Rothman also mentioned that the AVP sequel would also help to complete the bridge between the Alien and Predator film franchises.

There's no word yet on whether Paul W.S. Anderson (Soldier, Resident Evil) will return to direct the sequel. The British-born filmmaker currently has two other films on his plate.

Although the first Alien Vs. Predator picture wasn't among 2004's big successes, it did earn enough to recoup its $45 million budget and more. It's easy to see Fox pouring more money into the sequel, but it might have difficulty overcoming the negative image the first AVP received in the press; for example, only 22% of the reviews listed at Rotten Tomatoes were favorable, and IMDb visitors rated it an unimpressive 5.4 out of 10.

Both the Alien and Predator series remain popular among IGN FilmForce readers, so we'll be keeping a close eye on AVP 2 and see what develops.

AVP2 IN THE MAKING

January 26, 2006 - At the premiere of Big Momma's House 2, The Movie Reporter caught up with Fox studio head, Tom Rothman, who touched up on a few Fox projects including X-Men spin offs, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four 2 and AvP 2.

Q: AvP 2 - any development there?

TR: Yeah, uh, Hutch would know actually better but I think they just got the script, they just got the script in... we are making that movie, it's gonna be kick ass (smiles).

Q: How soon?

TR: We're hoping for August of 2007 release. That's what we hope.

STRAUSES ON AVP2 - NEW HELMERS TALK SHOP

June 9, 2006 - The Hollywood trade papers have finally gotten around to reporting the news that IGN FilmForce broke earlier this week: the Brothers Strause will be directing Alien vs. Predator 2 for 20th Century Fox. Davis Entertainment is producing. The sibling filmmakers, Colin and Greg, issued statements to the trades. Colin Strause advised Variety, "We really want to take it back to the original Alien and Predator films and make a serious, gritty horror film." Colin also advised The Hollywood Reporter, "We went after the first AVP and didn't get it. That's why it's so exciting that we're getting to do this one." Greg told Variety that "we want to take it back to its roots, without losing sight of the human struggle. That's what made the originals so good." Alien vs. Predator 2 is slated for an August 2007 release.

Davis Entertainment's John Davis and Robbie Brenner are producing. Davis Entertainment also produced the first film in the franchise, as well as Predator and Predator 2.

AICN REVIEW OF AVP2

June 28, 2006 - As you probably know, the movie site Aint It Cool News had somehow gotten hold of a script (unrevised or otherwise) of the upcoming Alien vs Predator 2 movie, and posted a review of it. Not being one for reading spoilers, I tried to avoid reading anything about it, but it's currently very topical... so here's what we know.

AICN gave the script a rather horrible review -- and if anything I've read about it is true, I can see why it deserved it -- but shortly after the review was posted, Fox hit them with a 'cease and desist' notice. Obviously the review was close to the mark, or Fox still aren't concerned with giving the long-time Predator and Aliens fans what they really want. Or both. Either way, part of the response to Fox from AICN is as follows:

"But, hey... let it never be said that (A) Fox doesn't pay attention and (B) that we are unreasonable. I consider the article to have served its purpose at this point... based on the response here and on other message boards, its pretty clear that fandom doesn't want what Fox is selling in this particular case, and if that means Fox goes away to try and come up with another premise, that can only be a good thing. And if the film does finally get released looking exactly like the script I reviewed, then Fox won't be able to claim that they didn't realize how terribly out of touch with fandom they are."

I'll still try to avoid any spoilers regarding the sequel (as I'd like to keep my expectation levels low enough to hopefully enjoy Alien vs Predator 2), but from what I've heard the script involved aliens, Texas, and a supermarket. Hmm.

Here's hoping the script that AICN reviewed was an early, early draft. If not... whoever wins, we STILL lose.

July 14, 2006 - 20th Century Fox just went horror crazy dropping new release dates from three upcoming horror films. Next up is Fox Searchlight's The Hills Have Eyes 2, which will hit theaters March 2nd, 2007. Marton Weisz directs off a script by Wes Craven and his son Jonathan.

PEARL IN, TEXAS OUT!

August 2, 2006 - Rumblings from the Alien vs. Predator 2 camp confirm that veteran cinematographer Daniel Pearl has indeed signed on as director of photography for the next installment tentatively dubbed Survival of the Fittest. Pearl, whose credits include an extensive array of music videos, much like Greg and Colin Strause themselves, was also director of photography for both the original and remake versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, making him no stranger to the horror genre.

Also interesting to note, my sources also tell me that the controversial and much hated 'Texas' script is out, and in fact was dead on the table before Ain't it Cool News even reviewed it. Hence the shooting location based in Vancouver, a city which would have a difficult time passing for Texas given all the rain and tall trees... This, however, doesn't mean Salerno's out, but we can expect a different script from him altogether.

LATEST AVP2 NEWS

August 14, 2006 - First off, IMDb has updated their cast and crew section with the names of the production designer and first assistant director, Andrew Neskoromny and Lars P. Winther, respectively. Neskoromny is no stranger to the Alien films or the science fiction genre in general, having already worked as the art director on Alien: Resurrection, as well as both 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and 'Star Trek: Voyager' series, Deep Impact, Mission to Mars and The Core. Winther has too many blockbuster action films under his belt to count. All in all, they seem like pretty decent choices.

Next, this little piece of info on the film's tentative subtitle from a post on the IMDb:
The only reason that title was ever linked to FOX is this: Once false titles start to appear online for a film in pre-production or production, the studio producing the film registers that title and all clones of it to prevent individuals and/or quickly thrown together websites/fan sites from creating phony websites/fan sites and confusing ticket buyers with a fake title-- espcially cheesy ones like Survival of the Fittest. What's amazing is that one website posted that title and everyone picked up on it and spread it like it was true.

And lastly, we have more tentative worldwide release dates on the IMDb ranging from August 10th to December 21st, 2007 - though that places the United States last to receive the film and Mexico first. Not only is this absurd, but with the first AvP so heavily pirated, I'm sure Fox will try for a more simulataneous worldwide release this time around. Also, as filming is expected to wrap in early December, that gives the film over a year for post-production. True, Paul W.S. Anderson may have cut it a little short last time, but a year is more than enough for any film and I highly doubt AvP 2 will be that effects heavy.

BATTLE OF AGES IN STREETS OF GUNNISON

September 9, 2006 - For whatever reasons, the producers of a B-grade movie called 'Alien vs. Predator 2' have chosen to set this epic battle within a town called Gunnison.

Sticklers for accuracy, at least in some respects, they plan to use business names from the streets of Gunnison, but will actually do the filming in the towns of Port Moody and Port Coquitlam, located in British Columbia's metropolitan Vancouver. Gunnison, located at about 8,000 feet, is surrounded by sagebrush and hay fields of timothy and brome. The two B.C. towns, as their names indicate, are located at sea level along Vancouver Bay.

Why Gunnison? Eylem Sonmez, clearance coordinator for the production company, a subsidiary of Twentieth Century Fox, said she didn't really know. 'They were looking for a small town surrounded by the mountains,' she told the Crested Butte News.

The film is expected to be released in the middle of 2007.

IESB'S CANDID INTERVIEW WITH TOM ROTHMAN

Friday, 29 September 2006 - The IESB had the chance to chat to Tom Rothman, Chairman at 20th Century Fox, recently and talk at lengths about various upcoming Fox projects including AVP 2. What can we expect on AVP 2 and what MPAA rating are they going after?

IESB: AVP 2, man, you are just keeping the fanboys ecstatic...

TR: Let's put it this way, I think the approach this time is going to be very hardcore. Very R rated. I think this is, we believe that, this pass on AVP with these filmmakers is going to be a lot closer to the hardcore experience.

IESB: I am hearing that this AVP 2 script resembles a lot of [James] Cameron's Aliens, that it is very hard, and it doesn't resemble the first AVP film much. Is that accurate?

TR: That is accurate. Very hardcore. Very violent.

IESB: Can you tell me what time frame this takes place in?

TR: Yeah, it's contemporary.

IESB: Is Lance Henrikson going to have any kind of appearance?

TR: I have no comment.

IESB: That's fair. Someone sends me this rumor that you guys are so happy with the way things are turning out for AVP 2 that you are already looking at a stand alone Predator film, any truth to that?

TR: Yes and no, no truth to that in current active prep, but yes it's true that it's something that we think and talk about.

GREG STRAUSE DISMISSES 'TEXAS SCRIPT'

Saturday, January, 6 2007 - In a story that I'm extremely relieved to hear, it seems the the original infamous 'Texas script' has been well and truly put to rest. According to 'Greg_Strause' on IMDB's comments page for Alien Vs Predator:

"It's not worth looking at. We didn't shoot that script, nor have I even seen or read it, so let it R.I.P."

Alien Vs Predator II just keeps looking more and more promising... but time will tell!
