Predator

There's been much speculation of a possible release of a third Predator installment, and with the release of Aliens Vs Predator, there could be new life breathed into the famous hunter. Can we still live in hope of another Predator-only movie?

Overview  (possible movie details, review)
News  (interviews, information, rumours etc.)

Predator 3      YET TO BE ANNOUNCED

It would seem that most Predator fans (myself included) hold the original movie in higher esteem than any other form of Predator story. This could be due to the 'feel' of the movie - the way the commandos interact with each other so realistically, and the way that each character is crafted that makes us actually care about them. (This is in direct contrast to Predator 2, where there wasn't anywhere near as much time spent 'getting to know' each character.)

Of course, us die-hard fans would prefer to see old Arnie return to the role of Dutch, but it seems a bit unlikely now that he's 'The Governator' of California. The other logical choice would be Danny Glover, due to his association with Predator 2, but surely he must be close to retirement age by now.

As for producer/director? John McTiernan (director of the original Predator, and also reponsible for the Die Hard series) would be one possibility. Apparently he is currently involved with the next Die Hard installment, so success in this venture might yet make him a contender for Predator 3.

And script-wise, there has always been speculation. I myself would love to see the original Dark Horse Comic story Predator (Concrete Jungle) made into a feature length movie (read about it here in the Comics section). This story involved Dutch's brother investigating Dutch's final mission and his disappearance, and used both jungle and city settings so would tie in nicely with both Predator and Predator 2.
Another story doing the rounds is known as 'The Zoo' and brings both Dutch and Harrigan to the Predator homeworld for battle in a Yautja Arena. And, yet another script can be found in the Downloads section, which involves new characters and a brief appearance from Harrigan and Dutch.

News/Interviews/Rumors

The information in this section is based on rumors and information gleaned from various sources. I do not claim this information as fact, but simple speculation on possible happenings. Please use your own discretion when judging accuracy.

ARNOLD IN PREDATOR 3?

February 26, 2002 - The ARNOLD FAN reports that a self-proclaimed inside source reveals the latest rumor rumblings behind Predator 3 and Arnold's possible involvement.

A new debut screenwriter, Matthew J. Virchow, is helming the PREDATOR III script. Jim Thomas and John Thomas (Predator, Predator 2) aren't going to write a third film because they have more "important" projects, as they claim, than rather doing another sequel. They feel that the second film didn't do that well, and they don't want to risk another flop at the box office. They also made remarks about an ALIENS VS. PREDATOR script being previously written, and so they were waiting for that film to be made, but it didn't happen.

Matthew J. Virchow, who've I've met with, has shown me some of the third script, and basically gave me some of the details surrounding it. FOX is going to take a look at it apparently. Matthew is searching for an executive to take in the script. FOX has said themselves, after knowing the script has been written, that they don't feel it is a winning project that would be as attractive as the 1987 original.

Well, Matthew is very anxious about his new genius script. For you eager fans who rumored about Kurt Russell taking a lead role - that is false. The only actor rumored is Arnold Schwarzenegger, considering his character Dutch returns as the hardcore soldier.

THERE MIGHT BE A "PREDATOR 3"...

July 1, 2003 - A few years back rumours circulated that action maestro Robert Rodriguez was set to make a "Predator 3". Nothing ever eventuated of it. But now, with "Aliens vs. Predator" around the corner, there's just got to be interest? Possibly. A booming script has indeed been written. Just one thing: the studio hasn't snapped it up yet.

Chances are no one's going to greenlight a stand-alone "Predator" film before they see how well "Aliens vs. Predator" does - but screenwriter Sam Park is confident they will, because the script the studio once considered using, "Predator 3 : The deadlier of the species" is still on his i-mac.

Park explains, "It's one of my favorite sci-fi action films. Some films are great for certain parts. This is a film that works terrifically as a whole and then some. Joel Silver's deft producing and John McTiernan's sure hand at directing came together at the perfect time to realize Jim and John Thomas's suspenseful, smart and witty action script. Arnold. He was born to play Dutch. Somehow the planets aligned, mystic forces gathered and "Predator" dropped into theaters in 1987 causing everything you knew about action and science fiction movies to change.

This was another attempt on our part to do something the fans would love and even the larger film audiences would embrace as familiar but with a new and exciting spin on the concept. [Joel Silver's assistant, Reggie Hunter] did his part and got this treatment into [Joel] Silver who told him it was great but... he no longer was working with Fox on this franchise (now strictly a Warner Brothers team player) and so, nothing came of it.

According to Park though, there might be some interest in it now.

I checked out the storyline treatment for the film and I must say, it isn't too bad at all. If anything, it's great to see Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch back in the mix. It's very loyal to the first film set in the jungle again, and sounds like it could be a perfect vehicle for Arnie. Lots of double crossing, Arnie vs Predator fights again, and trivial origins stuff.

Says Park, "Dutch is back. He turns his back on love to track down the traitor who wiped out his elite squad of soldiers. Two years later it's Dutch who is being secretly stalked by a Predator with a mysterious agenda until it learns that Dutch holds something more dear to him than life. This sends the Predator into its own private hell during the worst snowstorm in New York's recorded history to find Dutch's heart... and rip it out."

SEVERAL SCRIPTS FOR PREDATOR 3 MAKING THE ROUNDS

July 10, 2003 - With Aliens vs. Predator already in pre-production and James Cameron mulling over Alien 5, fans are curious to know what's happening with the other side of the equation, the Predator series.

According to Australia's Moviehole and Britain's The Z Review, there are currently three scripts for Predator 3 circulating in Hollywood.

One, entitled Predator 3: The Deadlier of the Species was written by writer Sam Park some years back. Park recently told Moviehole that interest in the script was being revived with the upcoming Aliens vs. Predator project. Deadlier of the Species brings Arnold Schwarzeneggar's character "Dutch" from the first Predator. Set in New York City during a blizzard, it involves a Predator who has come to find and kill the ex-commando.

Meanwhile, screenwriter Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Til Dawn, Spy Kids, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) has his own script for Predator 3 making the rounds in the nation's movie capital. Rodriguez's script takes the franchise back in time to a 17th century ship. The Predator is stalking its prey among the crew, who must fight back using only their inferior weapons and bravery.

A third script that also seems to be in contention, according to The Z Review, is one called The Zoo. This one unites both Dutch and Danny Glover's policeman character from the Predator sequel as two living trophies who are captured and brought back to the Predator homeworld.

It seems unlikely that any of these screenplays will be picked up until Aliens vs. Predator comes out, and Hollywood is able to gauge interest in the property. We'll keep and eye on things for you!

SCORPION KING VS. PREDATOR - Could The Rock fill Arnold's shoes in Predator 3?

September 2, 2003 - With an interesting script for Predator 3 circulating in Hollywood, the question has come up: who will play Schwarzenegger's character "Dutch" if the Austrian Oak becomes the governor of California?

Another fit, muscle-bound celebrity is needed, and one name that has been suggested is The Rock (pictured), the wrestler-cum-actor who hit it big with The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. Moviehole reports that according to Sam Park, The Rock is a leading contender for the role. Park, by the way, is the writer of Predator 3: The Deadlier of the Species, the script that seems like the best contender for a second Predator sequel.

For his part, Park hopes to pitch his treatment to Fox soon. "I think [The Rock playing Dutch] is an excellent idea and could insure the franchise continuing on for many years - [fellow writer] Clay McBride and I have definite ideas for sequels with some bizarre twists for the Dutch character and the Predators that we believe will keep the franchise stories fresh and exciting for decades," Park told Moviehole. "Mind you I and Clay do not have any involvement with Fox in any way at this point. It's their franchise and characters to do with as they please. Hopefully we'll get a crack at presenting the Predator 3 story treatment to them soon."

ROCK DENIES PREDATOR 3 INVOLVEMENT

September 17, 2003 - Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson denied to SCI FI a persistent rumor that he is going to star in a proposed third Predator movie by taking over the character of Dutch, which was originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I think somebody on the Internet started that [rumor]," Johnson said in an interview. "I think probably the writer."

THE ROCK UNSURE ABOUT PREDATOR 3

December 6, 2003 - Rumored to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger in both The Terminator and Predator films, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson did an interview with Moviehole.net the other day. He says he is still unsure about his involvment in 'Predator 3'.

Clint: You're being labelled 'The new Schwarzenegger' how does that make you feel?

The Rock: Cool. It's very cool. They're such big shoes to fill though; I don't think I could ever replace him. He's been ultra successful, and he's such a smart guy - of course, he's now governor as well! But it's a cool thing for people to say.

Clint: They're talking about you as someone that might replace Arnold for 'The Terminator 4' or 'Predator 3'. Would you be interested?

The Rock: I've heard that a lot actually. I don't know. Thing is, Arnold has put so much into those roles. They're his roles. I liked 'Terminator 3' but I loved the first two movies, and 'Predator', the first one, is just fantastic.

ALIENS, PREDATORS: IT'S A NUMBERS GAME

September 9, 2004 - You just can't kill a good franchise. Heck, you can't even kill a bad franchise.

Talking to an insider at FOX in Century City a couple of days back, I heard that there's high hopes for everything 'Alien' and 'Predator' - what with the pleasing box office figures for "Aliens vs Predator" and all. Despite not even being previewed for critics (probably just as well, I caught it yesterday and thought it sucked more than Pammy Anderson) the film has made quite a packet over the past couple of weeks, leaving FOX with a fat smile on their face and everyone who has got an idea for a sequel, spin-off or stand-alone movie very, very optimistic, if not giddy with possibility.

The plan is - new stand-alone "Predator" movies, new stand-alone "Alien" movies. No sequel to "AvP" at the moment. If anything, "AvP" was a way of a re-introducing these characters so that there could be new stand-alone films in their respective series. Never was it a plan to do a series of "AvP" movies.

One 'Predator 3' pitch that's been doing the rounds sounds stellar. It's set in snowy New York, and re-introduces Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, Dutch. You'd think the possibility of this one happening hinders on whether Schwarzenegger returns to the Governors chair but not necessarily, word is they think they could easily have someone else play the character from here on in. They picture 'Dutch' as being this big 'Riddick/Snake Plissken'esque character that will inevitably be more of a drawcard than the monster itself.

The script's apparently hotter than the Californian Sun. Best of all, for the studio, it leaves it open for a "Predator 4" - which is rumoured to feature a female rogue.

PREDATOR 3 SCOOP

Mid 2005 - Without getting my own ass in trouble, here's a smallish bit of news. Twentieth Century Fox are in talks with Johnny McTiernan to do a new Predator film - not a sequel, not a remake, not a prequel; more of a restart. There's talk - based on a treatment that's floating around the traps - that it might fix on Dutch's (the guy from the first film, Arnie played) grown-up commando kid.

John Cena's (one of Vince McMahon's kids) name has been branded about for the lead - but it's early days. They apparently want to coax JMT away from The Thomas Crown Affair sequel, have offered him this hoping it'll do trick.

WHAT'S THIS? THEY'RE REMAKING "PREDATOR"?

October 28, 2005 - I have to admit, this is the very first that I'm hearing on it, but according to the "Wrestling Observer Newsletter", WWE Superstar John Cena (pictured), coming up next in "The Marine" opposite "Nip/Tuck" star Kelly Carlson, is apparently up for the lead role in a remake of 1987's Arnold Schwazenegger starrer, "Predator".

A few months back, a scooper over at Latino Review touched on a remake, saying that John McTiernan has been offered the Directorial duties in an effort to lure him away from the "Thomas Crown Affair" sequel that he's been developing.

The "Observer" was one of the first to break the news about Cena's role in "The Marine", so I'm betting that there's a bit of "where there's smoke, there's fire" going on around this story. The WWE has pushed several of their Wrestlers for big screen projects as of late, with Cena, The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin & Kane all headlining new projects within the next few months.

Cena is in Australia at the moment for the "Survivor Series" tour, so hopefully we'll get some more info soon.

Writer Sam Park ["The Half-Way House"] had been hoping to lure Schwarzenegger back to play Dutch - one last time - in a "Predator 3", but seems FOX might have decided to go the remake route instead.

IESB'S CANDID INTERVIEW WITH TOM ROTHMAN

Friday, 29 September 2006 - The IESB had the chance to chat to Tom Rothman, Chairman at 20th Century Fox, recently and talk at lengths about various upcoming Fox projects including AVP 2. What can we expect on AVP 2 and what MPAA rating are they going after?

IESB: AVP 2, man, you are just keeping the fanboys ecstatic...

TR: Let's put it this way, I think the approach this time is going to be very hardcore. Very R rated. I think this is, we believe that, this pass on AVP with these filmmakers is going to be a lot closer to the hardcore experience.

IESB: I am hearing that this AVP 2 script resembles a lot of [James] Cameron's Aliens, that it is very hard, and it doesn't resemble the first AVP film much. Is that accurate?

TR: That is accurate. Very hardcore. Very violent.

IESB: Can you tell me what time frame this takes place in?

TR: Yeah, it's contemporary.

IESB: Is Lance Henrikson going to have any kind of appearance?

TR: I have no comment.

IESB: That's fair. Someone sends me this rumor that you guys are so happy with the way things are turning out for AVP 2 that you are already looking at a stand alone Predator film, any truth to that?

TR: Yes and no, no truth to that in current active prep, but yes it's true that it's something that we think and talk about.

PREDATOR 3 STARRING SLY STALLONE?

Friday, 29 September 2006 - According to one of our readers there is talk for a new stand alone Predator film that will not feature The Rock or John Cena as previously rumored but instead possibly Sly Stallone.

This is way too much to digest this early in the morning, Sly Stallone back as an action hero? I know it sounds a bit crazy but Hollywood is full of craziness. Our reader sent in this email with some details from AVP 2 plus some Predator 3 rumors. We can't confirm any of this at the moment so for now take this for what it is... a rumor.

"Saw your report about AVP2. There's talk now and again, its just talk, nothing concrete - that some hiring might start soonish for the new 'Predator' film. I haven't had any contact from the studio about it. Others apparently have.

"Originally, they were going to follow AVP up with a fifth 'Alien' film, one that would team Sigourney and Ridley again, but it didn't work out (for reasons I'm not privy to). 'Predator 3' (won't be called that), would be a brand new chapter in the series - and all those rumors about it starring The Rock or John Cena as Schwarzenegger's character, Dutch, aren't true.

"One bit of a interesting talk is that Sylvester Stallone might be being coaxed to do battle with the new 'Predator'. Guess they're thinking someone who can equal Arnie's statue? Not that he'd be playing the same character. I'd say that the plan is solely on FOXs end, and not Sly's end - who seems to have enough 'franchises' on the go."
