February 2003 - Rottocide:
Retracide, Willetton's finest hard rock band traveled over rough
seas on Wednesday the 12th of February to play for the offshore
board riders association. With ticket mix ups all over the shop
the boys were lucky to meet up again on the other cide.
Retracide took more equipment than you could poke a stick at; luckily
the band was there because the roadies were busy collecting the
cricket bats from the ferry. After a couple of phone calls the boys
were able to set everything up correctly with no major dramas.
Eventually Retracide played to a strong crowd of 137 and the Rottnest
country club was going off like their annual bingo night. Daniel
Fry saw the gig as the perfect opportunity for the stage debut of
his latest guitar, it was real and it was spectacular.
As the headlining act, the 'Cide had a lengthened double set. Retracide
kicked off with soon to be recorded single 'double barrel'. The
hard rock tune is up there with Retracide's finest. Another new
track was 'arachnecide' or 'arachnecidal' no one really knows what
to call it yet, but it's a top song never the less and will possibly
feature on the next release*.
More people danced as the night got older and several audience members
even joined the band on stage. At one stage Tapper and Azza couldn't
get hold of a microphone to do the backing vocals to 'Adam Botica
II' and 'rocking in the free world'. The boys won't forget that
ordeal and you can be sure security will be present in future.
The gig went smoothly until a couple of locals decided they could
pick up the bands guitars and give the band thing a go. The Retracide
boys were able to have a giggle as the Rottnest locals soon realised
that live performances involve more than just picking up a strangers
guitar and bellowing into a microphone. They sounded terrible but
Frizz was kind enough to offer the Rotto folk some free lessons.
The low light of the trip would have to be when a seagull took off
with Daniel Fry's chicken burger, it cost him an arm and a leg
.and
it wasn't cheap for Frizz either. It's almost a certainty for Retracide's
next song to involve an unfortunate seagull. Honorable mention,
roadie Steve-o's all rounder cricketing effort by the tents.
Note: there is no name for the body of water between our shores
and rottenest that I am aware of. Yes it is all the Indian Ocean
but surely Retracide can lay claim on the "Retracide straight"
as pioneers for the Willetton music scene. They've paved** the way
for other young bands to follow.
