Welcome. This simple website is designed to provide you with details of my experience as a professional writer, photographer and musician.
Born in South London, I've lived in Western Australia for 23 years. Currently, I'm state editor for Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine, food news editor for Scoop magazine, weekly restaurant critic for the Post Newspapers group and half of well-known local musical duo, Doris. For a full description of my work history, head over to my CV.
What I write about
Food, travel and the human condition. That said, I relish research and am open to most topics. In the articles page, you'll find a table which lists some of my published work, each linked to a short extract. It's a mixed bag of topics, ranging from Perth's sex industry to celebrity interviews to how I went being a waitress for the night.
Photography
I shoot professional-quality digital 35mm images of food, landscape and portraiture. Many have been published in local and national publications. Images are provided to clients on CD.
How Current is this Information?
I update and add to the samples every few months. If you have any comments or suggestions for improvement - particularly if something isn't working on the site - please let me know via email.
Juice Creative Writing Retreat
I modelled Juice on Summersong, a residential music camp held each January in New South Wales. And while the focus at Juice is on writing, not music, I wanted something of that delicious sense of renewal - that juice- I felt after coming home from Summersong - to be available to writers, too.
Juice offers various stimuli and activities to kickstart creativity, along with a focus on practical issues such as structure, technique and editing. Juice teachers are usually published authors and always professionals with big hearts and many years' experience in their chosen discipline.
Because life as a writer can be a bit lonesome, and because we all deserve a bit of nurturing every now and then, Juice offers other pleasures. These include a pretty rural setting, log fires, decent beds, good food and the occasional glass of medicinal vino. Sometimes we even write.
Juice is suitable for all levels of experience, including none. The next retreat will be held over three nights/four days in September 2006 and places generally fill fast. Email me (see link below) if you'd like to be added to the list for receiving information.
Doris
My duo Doris performs at music festivals, wineries and other concert venues throughout Australia and overseas. Last year saw us invited to the Ubud Writers Festival to teach songwriting. We also travelled to Queensland as guests of the Yungaburra Music Festival.
Back home in the west, we continue to enjoy ourselves immensely as invited guests at various fine local music festivals including, in 05/06, Araluen, Nannup and Fairbridge.
Take a look at the Doris page for more information on the duo and how to buy our two CDs. I've also included a few shots of my solo season at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, just to prove I really was there.
