The Real Diplodocus
("Double beam"). If you were a sauropod, you had no choice: You were blessed (or cursed) by certain physical attributes. You had a tiny head, a long neck, a massive body, four legs that resembled Grecian columns, and a seemingly endless, tapering tail. You also had a miniscule brain, and probably spent nearly all your time munching the tender leaves at the tops of trees only you could reach. If you were a Diplodocus, a Late Jurassic sauropod found in western North America, you had some of these typical features in abundance. For example, you were one of the longest of the sauropods - up to 90 feet (27 meters) in length, yet you only weighed about 12 tons (11 metric tons), far less than Apatosaurus, which weighed in at 30 tons (27 metric tons).
