The Real Pachycephalosaurus
("Thick-headed lizard"). For unclear reasons, the Late Cretaceous was the glory period for bizarre dinosaurs - and few were odder than the Pachycephalosaurs or bonehead dinosaurs. These two-legged plant-eaters had bodies that resembled the duckbills, but skulls that looked like nothing else on earth. Nearly every bonehead had a massively thick, domed skull; Pachycephalosaurus' was 10 inches (25 centimeters) thick! What was the purpose of such thick skulls? We may never know for sure, but some experts believe that male boneheads might have fought for dominance in the heard by banging their heads together, much as bighorn sheep do today. Pachycephalosaurus itself was the biggest bonehead, with the thickest skull. It grew to be about 15 feet (5 meters) in length, and lived, like so many other Late Cretaceous dinosaurs, in western North America.
