The Real Protoceratops
("First horned face"). Only 6 feet (1.8 meters) long, this
earliest known horned dinosaur was dwarfed by such later arrivals
as Triceratops. It had no horns, but its curving beak, large
neck frill, and other features left no doubt that it was a ceratopsian.
Probably the most interesting thing about Protoceratops was
discovered by famed explorer Roy Chapman Andrews during a 1922 expedition
to Mongolia. Here Andrews came upon undisturbed nests containing eggs
and skeletons of newly hatched young that he identified as Protoceratops.
They must have died during a sandstorm or other ancient calamity.
