(STEG-oh-SAW-rus)

The most noticeable feature of the Stegosaurus ("plated reptile") are the large plates and spines on its neck, back and tail. Many dinosaur experts believe these plates were used by the Stegosaurus to adjust its body heat. The spikes on its tail were used to defend itself againt enemies.

In spite of their size these dinosaurs had very small teeth. They fed on plants, probably by browsing on the ground or removing leaves from trees.

The Real Stegosaurus
("Plated lizard"). One of the best-known and most-beloved of all dinosaurs, this 30-foot (9-meter) armored stegosaur was also the biggest of its kind. It had a tiny head (with a brain the size of a walnut), short front legs, a huge, heavy body, and a thick, tapering tail. But Stegosaurus' most famous features were the large plates that ran in a row down its back, and the vicious spikes that tipped its tail. Look in nearly any dinosaur book, and you'll see Stegosaurus illustrated as having two rows of alternating plates on its back. In 1986, however, sculptor Stephen Czerkas built a scientifically accurate model of the dinosaur showing that the Stegosaurus' bone and muscle structure allowed it only a single row of plates. Now most experts agree that this was the real Stegosaurus.
