Chasmosaurus was the earliest long-frilled ceratopsian and was over 16 feet long. At the back of its head there is a long frill made from skull bones, which have grown backward. The frill covered the back of the neck, which could have been a soft place for Tyannosaurus Rex to bite into.

Collecting the Chasmosaurus
The Chasmosaurus is one of the rarest sets to collect in the entire Dino-Riders series. It was released at the tail end of the line, when sales and interest were dwindling. Because of this there were few sets produced, with most of them being distributed to Europe.

Your best bet is to pick up a Chasmosaurus MIB, though it might not be cheap. Keep an eye on eBay for one or hunt around online secondhand toy stores and you might get lucky. Otherwise you may be fortunate enough to find a Chasmosaurus as part of a loose collection, though collecting its armour and weaponry may be difficult.

The Chasmosaurus uses the same body as the Styracosaurus and Monoclonius, but with a unique head sculpt. Like its ceratopsian cousins it also has the head/tail swinging action, which can break if used roughly. Common areas of wear are its horn, beak, frill, feet and tail.

Dino-Rider Llava is made up of a common Series 2 body and head (the same as Shado and others). Check for wear in the usual areas.

The equipment for the Chasmosaurus is pretty basic. The saddle, missile and mega-laser are large, single-piece plastic moulds. Then there is the common blue Dino-Rider seat and belly band. Finally there is the pilot shield which clips on to the saddle. Each piece is prone to scratches and the belly band is of course notorious for snapping.

Tyco 1990 Catalogue: One of the newest dinosaurs in the Dino-Riders arsenal. Chasmosaurus features a clear protective shield and removeable land torpedo. heroic Dino-Rider "LLAVA" is included.

Chasmosaurus Notes
My Chasmosaurus came with a fold-out booklet advertising the Series 2 & Series 3 dinosaurs, as well as the Ice Age sets, video and figures. In this booklet the Chasmosaurus was listed as having a figure called Powl, who was obviously renamed Llava. The strange thing is the booklet was published in 1990, while the box Chasmosaurus came in is dated 1989. Did no one notice Llava's real name during the entire year it was in stores?

The Real Chasmosaurus
Chasmosaurus was one of the first horned dinosaurs. It lived about 80 million years ago in North America. Chasmosaurus' horns were rather small, but the frill around it's neck was very big. Scientists think that horned dinosaurs such as this one only used their horns for defence, not for attacking other animals.
