Wednesday Div 1 (2001)

Regular Season

The same six teams took part in this years top competition at Seamers. We won most of our games including our first game of the season which was a memorable one against second division side S-Tab. Despite coming off six months without any indoor cricket we made a convincing 120 batting first and then proceeded to keep our opposition to -56 to record our biggest ever victory.

We won most of our games against the first division sides. The few games we lost were against the Routers or the Generals and perhaps one game against the Ball Terrors. We finished the season on top of the ladder with the Routers finishing second, the Ball Terrors third and the Generals fourth. The Middies and Vets occupied the last two positions.

Finals

We came up against the Routers in the second semi-final and narrowly lost by around 10 runs. We looked like we might have defended our score before Mints and Bomber came third. Mints proceeded to face every single ball by only running on the last ball of each over which we weren't too happy with. So we had to get to the grand final the long way. The Generals had beaten the Ball Terrors in the other semi-final so they were our preliminary final opponents. We won the toss and elected to bowl first. This decision backfired somewhat with the Generals amasing something in the order of 90 runs. But our steady batting saw us hit the lead in the final over. Lewie #9 decided that he'd get out to make the game interesting before defending the last two balls to see us into another grand final. We got sent in by the Routers just like last year's grand final. We made a slightly better fist of our innings this time though to reach 54 which isn't a big score but it is defendable. But it turned out to be a little too low and the Routers got over the line by 9 runs. Phil Hall was again player of the grand final but again one of our own in Lewie #9, was the competition's best & fairest for the season.
