Simpol Australia began to develop cohesion in July 2002 when its inaugural coordinator, former federal health minister Dr Doug Everingham of Brisbane, addressed a 60-strong meeting convened at Fremantle by StopMAI Coalition.
In 2004, Doug Everingham was succeeded as national coordinator by Brian Jenkins of Perth who developed a database of some 300 Adopters. Prior to the October 2004 federal general election, aided by Charles Mollison of Queensland, the three implemented a ground-breaking campaign which signed up 60 candidates as Adopters of SP, plus affiliation of the Greens (WA)--the first party in Australia to do so, and the first party to have an Adopter in Parliament--Senator Rachel Siewert. The Greens (WA) currently have two senators and will have (from 22 May, 2009) four members of the W.A. Legislative Council.
The Simpol Australia website went online in November 2006, at which time Kate Bishop succeeded Dr Everingham as Queensland co-ordinator and Alison Jobling became co-ordinator for South Australia. Both have now retired and we again need coordinators for all states.
In April 2007, a national survey was made as a first step to incorporation. As a result, the number of serious Adopters on record was reduced but their quality strengthened.
Further momentum was gathered by a campaign to sign up candidates at the November 2007 federal election, by which time there was rapidly increasing community awareness and self-education about the issues of globalisation including global warming, loss of biodiversity, peaking of petroleum supply, and urgent need for improved management of energy, water and soil resources. As in 2004, the campaign was a success in that a second Greens (WA) senator was elected with our support--Senator Scott Ludlam.
