Protect basic social services and public utilities from GATS
Australia's health, education, energy distribution, water and other basic human services must NOT become subject to international "free trade" rules.

The World Trade Organisation's General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) must NOT limit the ability of Federal, State and local governments to protect the environment, health, safety and other public interests.

The current GATS treaty came into force in 1995.  Australia is a signatory to it. Under this treaty, the principle of "progressive liberalisation" will increase the pressure on all levels of government to contract out essential services to multinational corporations. Under the GATS, NO EXCLUSION can apply to public services which are supplied 'on a commercial basis' or 'in competition with other suppliers' .

The undersigned organisations and citizens call on the Federal Government and Opposition to:

  • Press for total and permanent exclusion of public enterprises and services from the GATS.
  • Ensure that the WTO Dispute Resolution procedure cannot be used to force the    privatisation of community services.
  • Prevent the payment of taxpayer subsidies to corporate suppliers and/or compensation to any corporation excluded from taking over public services.
