S-11Raising the too-hard issues which governments prefer to hide from view
When, on September 11-13, tens of thousands of Australians use Melbourne's streets to protest against global corporate control, it is predictable that TV cameramen will concentrate on finding isolated scenes of police-initiated violence, as their counterparts did at Seattle and Washington demonstrations.
The nature of coverage is now, however, irrelevant to the progress of a worldwide movement of civil society which has grown tired of waiting for vested-interest media and political parties to pay heed to the collateral damage caused by 'globalisation'.
The issues which will almost certainly not be reported on include:
- deliberate sacrifice of welfare and full employment to profit and revenue growth
- control of domestic industries by World Trade Organisation enforcers
- replacement of natural foods by genetic-engineered patented products
- replacement of public utilities by high-profit corporate cartels
- Big-Brother government for both boat people and permanent residents alike
- subjugation of human rights and natural environment to the greed for profit
Those issues are part of a comprehensive agenda now being discussed through the internet and at hundreds of "affinity group" meetings by the new generation of reformist citizens which regards non-violent direct action (NVDA) as the only effective remaining means of protest against globalism.
In Perth, a collective known as N25 is planning a major public convention to be held at Curtin University on 25th November. Only through such forums can the public be informed and motivated on the matters which governments and media find too hard.
