Sunday's rally to show fuller extent of public opposition to corporate globalism

Internationally coordinated demonstrations on Tuesday, 1st May, gave opportunity for some sections of Perth's anti-globalism protest movement to make their voice heard in the face of physical risks from a well-equipped civilian police force.

Other peaceable citizens, including the official trade union movement, will make their May Day statements on Sunday, 6th May at a daylong rally on the Fremantle Esplanade and a street march commencing from there at 12 noon.

As written by the West Australian's writer André Malan: "[the] source of their discontent - globalism - has many positive aspects and is, in any case, unstoppable.

"But what they can and must continue to resist is the way that global capitalism is forcing popularly elected governments to surrender power to profit-driven multinational corporations with little interest in or responsibility for the social and environmental consequences of their actions." (West, 3 May 01)

That, in a nutshell, is also the position of Western Australia's StopMAI Coalition.
