Cairns Group keeps its head firmly in the sand

Cairns Group trade ministers gathered in Uruguay from 3-5 September to rehearse for the November summit of the World Trade Organisation in Qatar. Unfortunately, resultant proposals show only that they have learned nothing from the 1999 Seattle debacle.

Two years after the WTO's trade talks collapsed in Seattle under massive protests from people and governments, and just two months before the Qatar summit, the Cairns Group's WTO proposals remain virtually unchanged, making the endeavours of chairman Mark Vaile a waste of time.
