Me163 of Major Wolfgang Spate
KdoFuhrer of Erprobungskommando (operational test detachment) 16
Bad Zwischenahn, May 1944

This is the aircraft that Major Wolfgang Spate flew the first operational sortie in the rocket fighter on May 13, 1944.
To celebrate the occasion the groundcrew painted the komet red, in honor of Baron von Richthofen's famous Fokker Triplane.
Needless to say, Spate was not impressed, and on return from the sortie, immediately ordered it repainted.
