A
massive sea of humanity marched along Manly seafront from Queenscliff
lagoon to attend the Jam For the Dam concert and rally which was organised
to stop the contentious Ardel development at Allambie Heights. The setting
for the huge event was Manly's famous Corso where a magnificent staged
area, replete with huge 'Jam For The Dam' logo was constructed by Camelot
Party Hire.
The Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee was joined on the day by other
Environmental groups such as Friends of the Quarantine Station and Save
Currawong to protest at the ongoing loss of our natural heritage.
The event itself, attended by thousands of concerned residents, included
rousing political speeches interpersed with music from Solstice, Infinity,
Milk, Manly Children's Choir, Raw Conviction plus DJs Dai Booth and Ady
Poultain.
Special Jam T-shirts were produced with 'Saving Manly Dam Catchment Sounds
Good' printed on the back.
Liberal Party government minister and Manly Federal MP Tony Abbott comforted
the huge crowd with the following words."Ladies and Gentlemen, I've
spoken to Senator Hill this morning (The Federal Minister For the Environment)
and he said to me that the Federal Government remains absolutely committed
to working with anyone who is prepared to act in partnership to get this
land back. So, ladies and gentlemen, we can save this land. It's not too
late, so let's keep working together to make Manly Dam the beautiful area
and the War Memorial park a treasure for the people of Sydney and Manly
Warringah for all time."
Unfortunately, despite overwhelming public support and the biggest gathering
ever on the Penninsula for an event of this kind, the Federal Government,
The NSW State Government and Warringah Council were unable to find the
political will to preserve the beautiful bushland and creek at Manly Dam's
headwaters
