Cowslip Orchid Caladenia flava (red fingers)

Make time to visit the bushland soon to view the flowers as the flowering season unfolds! With good rains, and a long cool winter, we have had a great winter flowering period. As the weather warms up again, many spring flowers, especially orchids are starting to appear.

Feel like a walk?

The annual Bush to Beach walk is on again this year Sunday, September 18th.

In past years we have held the walk in late August because the bushland is usually at its peak (in terms of wildflowers - especially orchids).

Late August can also coincide with the last of the winter storms, which often seem to be most ferocious on the day of our walks. We have scheduled this year's walk a bit later, hopefully to miss the worst of the storms.

This year, we have been collaborating with the Friends of Lake Claremont, and the Friends of Allen Park to survey a much longer walk - one that actually takes us to the beach!

This route for the walk (via Lake Claremont and Allen Park) is just one of several routes we are planning for the future. Our aim is to create a network of trails linking all of the natural areas between Kings Park, the ocean, and the Swan River. If you live near a natural area that is not currently part of the trail, we encourage you to help us work out a way of making it part of the network!

It is quite a long walk this year, so we have designed it in sections - you can do as much or as little of it as you wish - you are welcome to ring Dani on 9381 3470 to discuss options.

As part of the walk you can hear a talk about birds at Lake Claremont - and join us for a picnic / barbeque at Cottesloe Beach (Grant St Reserve).

Thanks for your suggestions

A number of people have responded to our request for suggestions regarding issues such as management and the timing of the walk. Thanks very much for your input. We are still collecting information about our options for dealing with the 'barrens' in the management plan, so it is not too late to put forward ideas.

Bushland Activities

We are presently hand-weeding bulbous weeds (Watsonia, Freesias, and Lachenalias), as well as other weeds such as Geraldton Carnation Weed. We welcome you to join us any Sunday morning you can spare between 8 and 10 am.

After 3 years of intensive work, the Watsonia patch is now quite small, and becoming easier to deal with. However, the Lachenalias are still spreading, and will need intensive work for the next few years.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 15th September (7.30 pm, 117 Derby Road, Shenton Park). We will be planning for the bush to beach walk, as well as reviewing the draft management plan.

You are welcome to join us!
