Fungi Exploration Day

It was most enjoyable having a warm and sunny day for our recent fungi exploration in Shenton Bushland. Unfortunately the sunny weather has inhibited the fungi from putting out their usual abundance of fruiting bodies, however, we did find a number of fungi and were fascinated by Roz Hart's and Joe Froudist's entertaining commentary on our finds. Thanks Roz and Joe!

The dates, locations and habitats of target fungi species are recorded as part of a wider ongoing project to document the distribution of fungi in Perth's bushlands.

In the Bushland

We were very lucky with our planting day this year - despite having a very dry Autumn, there has been good rain ever since we planted the 1000 seedlings raised for us this year by Shenton College staff and students.

Coming Events

Stall at Kings Park Wildflower show

September 28 September to 2 October 2006

We have been offered an opportunity to collaborate with Friends of Bold Park to put up a display highlighting the bushland corridor between Kings Park and Bold Park.

This will require us to spend some time producing the display - I hope to include photos and stories from Marg Owen - any suggestions welcome for what we can put up there.

We will also need to have a roster for people to come and run the stand (in collaboration with Friends of Bold Park).

If you are able to help with either of these, please let me know!

Great Marsupial Night Stalk

Perth Zoo has invited us to hold a Great Marsupial Night Stalk some time from early September to October. Would you be interested in coming to such an event? Please let us know and we will look at organising one.

For more information about the event, look up the Perth Zoo website (or Google "Great Marsupial Night Stalk").

Annual Bush to Beach Trail Walk

We are planning our walk this year to go from Bold Park (possibly Reabold Hill) through Lake Claremont to Allen Park on Sunday, September 17th 2006.

As part of our program of continual improvement, we need to meet to discuss lessons learnt from last year's walk. Some suggestions that I received after last year's walk include:

  • better assessment of times taken to do the walk (the first half was a bit rushed last year)
  • having experts talk about the bushland (people enjoyed the talk at Lake Claremont)
  • improved route marking or maps (so everyone knows where to go)
  • better information about how to get back from the end-point.

If you have been on previous walks, or walks organised by other groups, and have some suggestions on how we can improve the walk, please let me know! The more suggestions we have the better. If you can contribute to our planning meetings you are also welcome to join us. Please contact Dani at 9381 3470 (bojel@it.net.au).

Bushland Activity Days

Sunday mornings, 8-10am.

This is our busiest time of year for bushland activities - the more people that come and join us the more we achieve, so we welcome everyone regardless of experience - all you need is an intereat in the natural environment. At present we are pulling out weeds - Geraldton carnation weed, Watsonia, Pelargonium, Freesia, and Lachenalia.

After 5 years of intensive effort, Geraldton carnation weed and watsonia are becoming harder to find - which is a great reward for all that effort - and this is an important time to keep up the pressure on these two weeds because it means we can eradicate them in another two or three years.

Pelargonuim, Lachenalia and Freesia are still very wide-spread in the bushland. Once we have Watsonia and Geraldton carnation weed under control we can focus more on pelargonium, lachenalia and freesia.

If you are able to join us, but can't come on Sundays, or would be interested in starting up a mid-week group, let me know - we can explore options.
