The Committee Room

March committee meeting - Dani, Kim, Steve, John, and Dorothy

We have been holding our committee meetings in the bushland on Sunday mornings after our morning activities. Our next meeting is Sunday 20th May. Home-made muffins and coffee provided!

In the Bushland

We have spent most of the summer clearing around habitat trees and removing veldgrass that survived last year's spraying. Now that the rain has arrived we are getting ready for the weeds to emerge.

Funding Applications

We have applied for SALP funding for 2008 to manage fire hazards within the bushland. This project involves a collaboration with FESA who will survey the bushland to identify fire fuel loadings within the bushland, and with the City of Nedlands and the Health Department of WA to implement weed control and fuel reduction activities in zones adjacent to Health Department facilities, Shenton College and the Dog's Refuge Home.

Annual Bush to Beach Walk

We are planning to hold the annual Bush to Beach Walk on Sunday 30th September. The route we are exploring for this year is from Allen Park to Point Resolution on the Swan River.

This route is only possible during times of low tide on the river to allow us to walk along the shore. The three Sundays of low tide during this time of year are: 2nd September, 30th September (long weekend, beginning of school holidays), 14th October (end of school holidays).

We decided that 2nd of September is too early (inclement weather), and 14th October is too late (no wildflowers).

It should be an interesting walk, traversing the peninsula from the coast, through the wetlands at Lake Claremont, and then following the remnant bushlands along the river foreshore.

The map below shows the proposed route of the walk:

Planting Day

Shenton College students have looked after another 200 Acacia saligna and Acacia pulchella (prickly moses) seedlings that were too small to plant out last year. We have decided to plant them out on Sunday 20th May (the day of our committee meeting - so why not join us for a planting session and then muffins and coffee while we discuss our coming activities for the year? We will be planting in the same location as last year (near Grace Vaughan House).

Next Meeting

Our scheduled meetings for this year are Sunday mornings 10am in the bushland (or a nearby cafe if it is raining). These are scheduled for:

  • Sunday 20th May
  • Sunday 17th June
  • Sunday 19th August
  • Sunday 21st October

Our next scheduled meeting is Sunday 20th of May beginning at 10am at the bushland. I will bring muffins, tea, coffee, a thermos of hot water and misk. BRING YOUR OWN CHAIRS! If it is raining we will adjourn to a cafe (any suggestions?)

Contact Dani (9381 3470 or bojel@it.net.au) for details.
