A Garden Escapee?

This Thryptomine is probably a garden escapee that has found its way into the bushland - is in Dorothy's patch near the Grace Vaughan House entrance.

Bushland Activities

Recent rains have brought out the usual assortment of weeds - Freesias, Watsonias, BlackFlag, Lachenalias, and Geraldton Carnation weed. After 6 years of concentrated effort the Watsonia patch is becoming easy to manage - and Watsonias are now becoming difficult to find.

Similarly, Geraldton Carnation weeds are becoming scarce - except for a patch where Kate is doing Black Flag management trials. Once those trials are finished we will move in and control the weeds.

On the other hand, Freesia and Lachenalia are not under control, and we are turning our focus onto them.

BlackFlag is worrying us; we do not have a chemical that is very effective at controlling it yet, and physical removal is not possible. This could become a huge problem in the future if it continues to spread.

Bush to Beach Trails Promotion

Last year, in collaboration with the Friends of Allen Park, and Friends of Lake Claremont, we obtained $1500 from Lotteries Commission and Department of Sports and Recreation to develop promotional materials as part of our effort to get the Bush to Beach Trails network formally recognized.

To do this we are producing, and sending out leaflets to local government, recreation groups, potential commercial sponsors, and land holders along the route of the trail. We will follow up these letters with meetings to talk about ways of making the trail a reality.

Our aim is to identify ways of funding the maintenance trail, and set up a collaboration of groups interested in looking after the trail.

Thanks to June Weller and Frankie Shaw for the exquisite drawings of flora and fauna that form the left hand border for our leaflets.
