Get those weeds!

As we move into summer, or focus shifts from winter weeds (bulbs and geraldton carnation weed) to summer weeds (pelargonium and veldgrass).

Summary of our activities for 2008

Freesia

Freesia are being fairly well controlled by spraying - we mainly worked in the northern part of the bushland.

Flinders Ranges Wattles

Flinders ranges wattles are very visible when they flower in winter - we just cut them down when we see them.

Our long-term plan is to remove them from the Grace Vaughan House gardens and defence department land so that they stop invading.

Geraldton Carnation Weed

Geraldton Carnation weed has been a major focus for this year - in 2 areas - near the western boundary, and in the Health Department Land.

The frequent spring showers mean that it keeps growing right into summer.

Lachenalia

Poor chemical control of lachenalia in previous years prompted us to hand weed - but this year Vicki organised special spraying - so we would have been bettere off to just leave it.

Veldgrass

We assisted Phil with spraying during late winter. Also spent summer removing survivors - and will do so again this summer

The three points indicate areas missed by Phil that need to be sprayed next winter.

Watsonia

The Watsonia patch is much less work now that the major infestation has been dealt with.

We just visit it a couple of times in spring to remove any stragglers.

Miscellanous weeds

There are lots of them! Things like fountain grass, victorian ti-tree, and anything else that doesn't belong gets the chop!

Next Meeting

Our next committee meeting will be discussing plans for 2009 - for example, what should we do with the 'barrens' area near Lemnos St.

The committee meeting will be held on Saturday 13th December at 4.30 - 6pm Matilda Bay Reserve (near the kiosk). Bring a picnic along!

We will hold our AGM from 6 - 6.30pm - and welcome new people to our committee !
