Abyssinians are so named because of their similarity to the sacred cats portrayed in ancient Egyptian art. Like those seen on wall paintings, modern-day examples are medium-sized muscular and athletic cats with a long tapering tail, large pointed ears and large eyes.
In personality, they are active, alert, and highly intelligent. Many regard them as being similar to a dog - they will be happy to teach you a new trick everyday. In fact, an Aby will find almost any object around the home is just perfect to turn into their latest toy.
Abys come in a variety of colours, the most common being Tawny – a rich brown shade, Cinnamon – a warm copper colour (also known as Sorrel), Blue & Fawn – the lightest colour of all. The coat is unusual in that the ends of the hair are shaded with black or dark brown, called “ticking”, not unlike rabbit fur and just as soft.
A challenge to breeders has been the development of Silver Abyssinians - replacing the undercoat with Silver whilst maintaining the uppermost coat ticking has resulted in Black Silver, Blue Silver, Cinnamon Silver & Fawn Silver. The attractive Blue Silver is achieved as the colour blue is a dilution of black. Silver is one of the most difficult colours to work with to achieve a contrasting pattern of very high quality and clarity, and what is seen today has taken many years of dedicated breeding.
Here is the scenario: Take a wall in your lounge-room, paint it in any colour such as black, chestnut, or a dark shade of blue. Then try to paint underneath that with white paint so that your wall provides a soft, blended look. Not an easy task, by any standard!
However, as breeders we cannot only consider colour – engaging temperament, robust good health, accepted breed standards and the genetics underlying all this have to be taken into consideration when embarking on a breeding program.
For those of all ages, an Aby can certainly be an excellent companion. They have an adaptable character and when taught from an early age they will enjoy all the family has to offer, including travel and walks using a cat harness. Two Abys from Kimara happily spend many months at sea on their family boat.

Tiggy is a Blue Silver. Her body and head type are exceptional along with her very blissful nature. Being so laid-back, Tigra had no worries when she travelled across Australia to Queensland, to Zinnabar Abyssinian Cattery, to meet up with a stud cat owned by Kerstin Jones to expand our genetic pool. She is an exceptional mother to her kittens and a joyful companion. |
